Replacing pooched dual charger

Post by DaveC426913 »

I just discovered that my charger is pooched. That's why my two (NEW!) batteries left me in the lurch yesterday.

It was a 10A that's been discontinued (ProStart Guest?)

Anyway, I'm in the market for a replacement.

This one seems to be in stock at my local chandlery:

https://www.foghboatsupplies.com/batter ... k-12v.html

It's only an 8A but I don't know from chargers.

Thots?

I have the same make unit I believe , mine is a 12amp unit what kills these units is overheating due to lack of proper ventilation when I installed mine many yrs ago I installed 4 x 5/16 nuts as spacers between the mounting base & mounting wall so as instead of only approx 1/8" heat venting space I have about 3/8" spacing & on the mounting wall I drilled a bunch of venting holes behind the unit it,s self to allow for full flow thru venting I then installed a facing grill to cover up the holes see pic

Image
U can see the grill on the left side of the ladder at the base the unit will last for yrs longer with more venting than if mounted directly to the wall with only approx 1/8" venting it gets quite hot

Good to know.

I was told the biggest folly is mounting it above a battery, whose off-gassing eventually corrodes the electronics.
I didn't think of the heat aspect.

I assume all stock :macx: 's have the charger hidden inside the aft galley. Never seen it before until the other day when I took the galley face off to rewire.

New charger is currently hanging by some zip ties from my mahogany shelf unit above the aft battery until I find a permanent location.

Pretty lights! :)

Stock boats didn't come with a charger, unless I'm mistaken. I know my M didn't have one.

Stock "X" did not have charger, battery, or engine from the factory. Dealers would sometimes install all three.

My 2008 came with a start battery right from the factory how do I know !
Because I bought with-out any commissioning when it arrived from the factory to the dealer it went straight to the canvas shop after the aft stern rail seats were installed to have a full enclosure installed by Dowsar Yachts then I picked it up at the dealer all hardware , running & standing rigging spreaders , rudders , u name it were all still in their original cartons , blocks , pulleys , bare mast I was not paying for commissioning that I could do myself

It’s like moths to a mooring light :D !
The pretty lights get’em ever time!

Our Mac26X didn’t have provision for a charger so we added that with our DC Mods.
Maybe Mac26M are different?
Our charger is on mount board supported a pair of hangers that catch the liner lip.
That way we can easily move it should the need occur to help someone else at a marina or to charge up a car battery if need be.
The unit we have is a multi chemistry charger and we manually direct the battery to be charged via a selector switch.
Our mount board has a pair of cleats to neatly wrap up the power and battery leads.
We made a custom connector end to make it easy to transition from the boat wiring to clamps to standard DC plug.

This should also come in handy should we decide to go with a trolling motor for the dingy (or maybe even get dual use of the trolling motor as a bow thruster like Gazmn did…🤔)

Best Regards

I bought the Pro Mariner from BWY. This is a very sophisticated charger. Supports dual batteries lead acid and AGM. Has a deep cycling algorithm which conditions the batteries during long idol periods of no use.

Looks like we all got on the same wavelength. Just installed my on-board charger (father’s day gift). Glad not to be hauling my old car battery charger in and out of the boat, and glad to not be restricted to only charging one bank at a time. :)

I have the same Promariner- Prosport hd 12 amp charger that a number of you have. I also noticed that several Mac owners occasionally connect a small generator to charge batteries. Is it okay practice to attach a small 1000 w generator like a Honda EU 1000i to my shore power input, to operate my 12 amp battery charger?
