What goes around comes around.

Post by Mark Prouty »

This summers results so far:

Lake Mendota: Score Mark 0 good samaritans 1
My battery is dead. My son dinghys around and is able to obtain a portable jump start. (negleted to bring mine).

North Channel Cruise: Score Mark 2 good samaritans 1
1. After a large unexpected storm, I loan my electric drill so another could fix a broken rudder.
2. I loan my my baby stay adjuster to another to help fix a broken side stay on his boat.

Wisconsin River: Score Mark 4 good samaritans 1
1. Family get stuck on sand bar and his pee hole doesnt work because the dad kept trying to power off. He thinks he needs a new water pump. I loan him my wire that I carry for such occasions and he clears the sand from the hole. He never thanked me oh well.
2. Older gentleman with a couple of nice looking ladies aboard get stuck on sandbar with large jetboat. I cruise over with my son and one of his friends and we help push him off.

But now the big one just as Im ahead on good deads cause of boating.
I am driving into work today and run out of gas on a rural road. Just as I get out of the car a man in a construction workers diesel pickup stops and asks if I need help. I tell him Ive run out of gas. Not only does he go to his home for a gas tank, he fills it for me and uses it to fill my tank. Set me back about a half an hour. Well, that one pales anything Ive done all summer.

Glad there weren't any bandits:

Now, when CA folks ask this type of question, it's usually worth pointing out that we mid-westerners enjoy the winter months. :D We like to stay indoors and count all the money we're saving on our mortgages and property taxes.

50 degrees and a jacket is better than 110 degrees

Post by Robert »

I am from the North but have settled in the South, I would trade 110 degrees and a swimsuit for 50 degrees and a jacket anyday. I boat until the ice sets in, once ran my Mac26X through thin ice that was hard to see.

The long winters can be pretty rough though!

I may live and boat in Ca, but my job is in Minnesota, so I know all about cold weather. I am actually out here in MN working now.

Reminds me of a TV reference or review of a new book. The topic is something like "Pass it along!" After performing a friendly deed, then simply ask the "strandee" to do the same for someone else down the road.

If anyone else knows of this book, I'd appreciate a link ??? :?: :?:

... and I'll be pleased to pass it along!

This may not be what you are looking for, but it was actually in a song: Chain of Love

It was also in a movie: Pay it Forward

Thanks Guys ... bet that's it!

On EDIT:

Yep - and there IS a book too ...
but I now recall catching just a snippet of the movie somewhere on the Dish.
Based on a best-selling novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde, and boasting the star-power of three prior Oscar winners--Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osmont--PAY IT FORWARD spins a heartwarming yarn about an eleven-year-old boy who comes up with an utopian idea as a project for school. History teacher Eugene Simenot (Spacey) offers the same ongoing extra-credit assignment he has proffered every year: Come up with an idea that will change the world.

So Rich, that begs a question. You live in Callyfornie and work in Minnesota??? I have heard of commuting, but I think you win the award for the longest regular commute. I gripe about my daily 20 minute commute to work or 20 minute commute to the lake.

Man, your frequent flyer miles must be worth a fortune. I'd cash those in and stash a Mac in Minnesota.

His commute's longer than mine, but this type of thing isn't that uncommon. I live in Maine and have been working in Milwaukee for the last 16 months. Fly out Monday morning and back Thursday night . . . took my family on a nice 2 week vacation in England this year by using the FF and hotel points :)

Five years ago, myself and five others invented some new technology and formed a start-up company to make our fame and fortune (ok..forget fame, just fortune). Orginally it was going to take about a year, then two, then three...yada..yada. After 5 years of 100,000 plus airmiles/year and many nights away in a hotel room (like tonight) I am about done. Minnesota isn't a bad place, honestly, despite the cold and humidity, but with the family in Ca, it isn't worth the sacrafice.
