Do the Suzuki Standard Controls Fit the Mac 26X

Post by Mark Prouty »

I am curious. I just had my Suzuki engine installed. My dealer put on Ultraflex controls. These controls don't have the engine warm-up lever. The dealer, of course, said I didn't need it with the electronic fuel injection. These controls seem a little cheap. The up-down arrows fell off the first time out. When I asked the dealer why he had installed these, he said the Suzuki controls didn't fit and the Ultraflex controls had a better warranty anyway.

Questions:

 Do the Suzuki standard controls fit on the Mac 26X?

 Is the warm-up lever needed?

 Does anyone use the warm-up lever with these engines?

I was reading Paul S's thread on customer service. Here are some things that dissapointed me with the Marina that installed my engine.

 Put on Ultraflex controls instead of Suzuki controls without telling me.

 Did not put the behind the drain line lower reinforcing bar. I had given him a complete set of pictures. He didn't tell me he had left this out. When I asked why, he said he didn't want to charge more labor.
note: I don't think it necessarly needs the reinforcing bar at this location.

 Launched my boat when I wasn't there without the guide tubes and put a nasty scratch in the gelcoat.

 Did not cover the screw holes from the old controls that we had agreed on. This looked bad. When I asked him to correct this, he cut a piece of white scrap sheet metal and screwed it over the holes. This looks bad and I'll have to correct it.

 Put a charge on my credit card without telling me. I was checking my credit card account on-line and there was a March charge of $100. They had forgotten to charge me my original $100 deposit in Janurary. When I called to find out why, the woman working there was very defensive. I felt like I was an annoyance - not a valued customer.

 Did not install a Piranah prop after my requesting it several times.

I didn't contest any of the above because I hate to burn my bridges but I wouldn't go back there for service. I felt that after the sale, their goal was to just get me out of there. No friendly salutations or handshakes.

Mark,
I think that you may have the warm up controls on your boat but not know it. Try pulling the throttle lever out from the base and then rotate it to a higher throttle setting. I hope that helps. Happy sails, Tony

My Suzuki was installed by my Mac dealer, both the first Suzi and the first oversized motor he had installed. In contrast, again, to Paul's experience and yours, everything in my installation was perfect, albeit costly.

He recommended using Suzuki's "deluxe" control, not the standard or after-mkt control - extra $200, includes warm-up, fits fine, works fine.

Yes, I use the warm-up lever while idling at the dock, probably not necessary with EFI.

The transom has three large bulkheads visible inside, center for the motor mount, and each side for the rudder bracket mounts. My reinforcing channel bridges all three of these (about 4' long). This channel is made of aluminum (maybe 3/8 or 1/4 inch thick?) and about 4 or 5 feet long. It is drilled for each rudder bolt, drilled for each of two lower motor bolts, and drilled for the transom thru-hull drain. It undoubtedly, and quite strongly, reinforces the transom.

I would consider that control an upgrade. It makes a much cleaner installation that the usual outboard box bolted to the side of the pedestal.
