Top 10 Adds to a Mac?

Post by blue_shiba »

Could anyone give me their top 10 things they would add to a basic package purchase of a new Mac? Things one couldn't or shouldn't be on a boat without.----------Thanks

In no particular order here is what I think (11 items):

Intermediate Reef point on mainsail
Lines led aft
Lazy jacks or something similar to help w/mainsail
Roller Furler (if keeping mast up)
An engine (sounds silly but it doesn't come with basic Mac) w/remote controls, fuel tanks and all steering linkage
Porta Potty
Sometype of depth gauge/speed instrument combo (gps is also nice)
Maist raising kit (not sure if that is standard on an M)
Solar vent for Cabin (keep air flowing even when closed up)
Extra battery (1 house/1 starting)
Marine Radio (portables work fine for short ranges, get Fixed with Antenna for longer range if required, I have both, but use the portable more often)

Oh yeah-stuff that doesn't come with boat but you need:
Life jackets
Emergency kit (flares, etc.)
Fenders (2 min, 4 is best)
Docklines

I may have forgotten something, hopefully someone will give a different perspective. This list will allow for a safe and enjoyable sailing/motoring experience. Also if you leave the boat in the water you probably need barrier coat and bottom paint, store it on the trailer and you don't need it.

Darn, one more thing that makes sailing more enjoyable:

Topping lift or boom vang to hold boom up and increase sail control. The boom falling all over the place is not fun.

Add snap shackles to all the rigging, derigging, connections.

Pelican hooks for lifeline connections and backstay.

A little something to sit on.

A half gallon of sun block lotion. Big hat with optional chin strap.

Something to clean the salt off your eyeglasses.

Empty plastic Mayonnaise jar

And gees, don't forget the cooler and plenty of ice for the booze.

Shiba - Ill add Jeffs item to my list as 10+

except I will pitch Heaths Boomkicker as the way to go here

PS - talk locally about bottom paint if you are staying in pristine Lake Ontario as I suspect you are...we dont use paint or barrier in the fresh water where we are - this will be our 5th season in this location

THe safety equipment in some of the above lists isnt optional stuff imho...my list was more aimed at the nice to haves rather than the must haves...

If you are talking about initial neccesities I'd go with KMC's list, if you want to know wish list mods/stuuf Id go with a hybrid of Cats and Jeffs. If you want to know what I want to add now, it would be hard to find space to bolt more stuff to my boat but I'll give it a try.

1. dodger, were not going with a full enclosure. were going to have a tent maker sew up a drape tent to connect to the aft end of the dodger and drape over the bimini. complete with screens and flaps. This will allow us to stow it in a very small bag
2. Portabote dingy and 3 horse kicker (rapidly running out of stuff I want)
3.Hot water shower built into the head with a bilge pump in the corner to lift the water out
4. beer (for hydration)
5. wine (in case I run out of beer)
6. Chips (in case I get too hydratred)
7. beef jerky (it'll still be good next trip)
8. One of those shiny tin foil looking french cut bikinis for my wife
9. My wifes agreement that its a good idea to wear one of those shiny tin foil looking french cut bikinis
10. an on deck hammock. bought already havent made the mounts yet.

All of that, plus a pressurized water system, a good stereo and video/tv system and you are set!

Need to haves:
1.-Boathook
2.-At least two fuel tanks, preferrably w/separate lines.
The only time you can have too much fuel is if your boat is on fire. Hence...
3.-2 fire extinguishers. one forward, one aft.
4.-PFDs for all + extras.
5.-Good rubber + spare for trailer.
6.-Signals, (flares, smoke better in daylight.)
7.- Fenders
8.- Dock lines. I have one from stern to bow cleat on each side.
9.- VHF radio. Ontario is big and includes shipping traffic... a necessity!
10-Manual bilge pump. Cheap insurance and works when your battery doesn't.

Worthwhile Improvements:
1.-Removable pin keypin shackles on lifelines and halyards (Ronstan RF1033)
Vast improvement in speed and simplicity to trailer. Worth their weight in gold.
2.-Butane cartridge stove.
Stows in little space leaving counter clean, simple, mobile, reliable, cooks great.
3.-Bimini. Simply can't sail in southern latitudes without one,
4.-Screen for hatches.
Sew or buy something to cover the hatch openings if you ever want your mate
to spend the night on the boat again.
5.-The Tahoe Jack tweeked mast raising mod.
This makes mast raising fun and entertaining for gawkers.
6.-Dual or single line reefing.
Cheap and almost makes reefing fun. You -will- reef often so make it easy.
7.-Split electrical system, dual separate batteries w/crossover switch.
8.-Galley mod. I did a Duane Dunne completely open one, tons of useful
space down there.
9.-5 gal port-o-let. You need a simple reliable biffy that's the right height.
(see... I speak Canadian!) Use the recommended deoderizer too.
10.- A Relable Anchor Rig. My Florida rig (Guardian G11) is probably -not- what you want for Ontario, lots of sand here, Ontario's rocky. Ask local sailors and store guys what works. Think Ken Smith & Mark P are up there. Have plenty of chain, plenty of line, and a backup anchor. Yes it seems like a waste of money till you're trying to sleep!

Fair winds.

BLUE-SHIBA...
Here is a must...one extension pier hook. It makes Docking simple. And when that favorite cap or hat goes overboard....you'll have no problem picking it up.
Edit add on, opps I forgot to mention, a depth/fish finder. Theyre necessary !
Happy Sailing
