NY state Canal system update - still closed, lots of damage

Post by Catigale »

Official web page here

There were a couple of people here posting about trips on the Canal system - see the above website for updates, there should be an official update on the whole system in about two weeks, from news reports.

It is not unlikely the entire system may be closed for the rest of the season, imho

Barbara and I drove the NY THruway today and stopped at lock 9 - the damage to the lock and ground was apparent as the water line was about 6 feet up the lock building - there must have 12 feet of water over the lock at least. A 36 inch oak tree was resting on the guard rails - I can only imagine the other stuff that was in the water.

It will take a while to sort this out.[/url]

Wow ! Thanks for the warning. I was planning yet another trip down the canal for this september, but now maybe not. Which city is Lock 9 near by the way? I was near the Finger Lakes on the canal in Sept 2004 when the deluge from a Florida hurricane hit and they could barely dump the water out of the canal system fast enough............but they were able to avoid damage then. I can 't even imagine what volume of water they have had to deal with this past week.

I dont know about the canal but during the flood after the hurricane year before last....there was about 8" of water in the cottage on the Susquehanna River just south of Binghamton. This year we figure there may have been 7 or 8 feet in the cottage. Our neighbor built his above the required flood level and didnt get any inside after the hurricane but had about 6 feet this year. That is what we are judging by. Jim's parents lived there during the summer for over 30 years and never had water inside. It sets about 4' off the ground and the only times they had flood problems was during the January thaw when ice choked the river....now it's been inside twice.

UPdate - from the news this morning it looks like with the exception of 1 or 2 locks they will have the boat aspect of the Canal back up and running in one or two weeks....

MOst of the picnic areas and canalside activities are going to need to be rebuilt, so dont plan on those, but I would guess if you want to travel the canal this summer you should be ok in terms of passage at least.

check the official link above or PM me if I can help...

Wow, I can't believe they will get the Canals fixed that Quickly, I just got back from visiting my Mom in Binghamton and it certainly was a mess. I read that the section of 88 that was taken out going in both directions will not be repaired until the fall.

I wonder how Arrowhead Campground is fairing in Scotia outside Albany. I stayed there about 3 summers working at GE.

Good they were open quickly...nice they are free this year for recreational users.

The Hudson has been really muddy and lots of debris floating down from up north. We aren't motoring much due to the cost of gas anyway...
