Centerboard Problem

Post by jon2710 »

I think that I may have slightly bent the centerboard pivot pin. When the centerboard is completely pulld up it will not go back down. If I get in the water I can hook my feet on the board, pull slightly to starboard and the thing will fall on its own.

Any suggestions on how to straighten the pin with the boat still in the water? In six years I've never had to work on the centerboard either above or below the surface so I'm at a loss as to where to start.

Many thanks for your reply(ies), Jon Hicks, "ga'Zel", Colorado Springs

centerboard

I think it highly unlikely that the 1/2" solid stainless steel pivot pin is bent. More likely is one side of the U shaped hanger is bent, raising one side of the centerboard. I can think of no way to fix that other than dropping out board and hanger to check it for straightness. On a trailer or lift, not in the water. Yes, it's possible with the boat in the water, but very much not worth the hassle in my opinion.

If you are diver, or if you know or have one on the payroll you can do it in the water. I reccomend doing it on the trailer where following applies. Once you are under the boat, (after you or somebody else unscrewed the nut and hammered the pin out) while pulling the board down, watch for that bracket. It will pivot around the pin and will get you right on forehead. Painfull experience. Trust me on this one, that bracket is heavy especialy on your forehead.

Here are a couple of earlier threads that discussed the centerboard.
If you read the thread on "gybing" boards, be prepared to become confused -
but if you have the time, at least it will deliver a few smiles.
