Better Powersailors than the Macgregor Available

Hey saltdogs,

I thought that the MacGregor 26M is the only motor sailer available, until I encountered these little floaties.... Here are some euro boats that might be better powersailors than the Macgregor;

Dufour Duo:

These boats are a little bigger than their American cousin since euro trailer maximum size is a bit bigger than the American trailer maximum size. I think the difference is about 4 to 5 inches wider (correct me if I'm wrong).

These boats are also a bit more expensive. The difference is like the difference between the price of a Lincoln Town car and a Mercedes (roughly $10k). I'm only comparing used boat prices since I cannot find new boat prices on the internet and prices for used vary widely due to different condition and options installed.

Both these boats have a shower. I'm sure the Odin has a shower, but I'm a bit rusty on my Spanish/French. I think that "ducha" means that the Dufour also has a shower. The Mac doesn't have a shower. The interiors are a bit plusher than the Mac, too.

Too bad they're not available here due to the trailer size limit difference. I would've loved to test sail/motor these before making my purchase decision.

Anybody ever sailed on these euroboats? What are they like?

Aside from a significant price differences for a new boat, there are at least two disadvantages to the dufour and odin compared to a Mac, that I'm aware of just by looking at the photos.
Neither have opening forward hatches which means except in northern climates you'd burn up inside.
The Dufour pictures show exposed bolt ends from the cabin top winches in the overhead near the companionway. I'm 6'2". As many bruises and cuts I've had to my head from my X before I applied cushioning, I can imagine some serious injuries to anyone over 5'10' tall in a seaway.

Powersailing just east of cleveland Ohio sells the Odin 28. I saw it at the January 2005 boat show and he sold one to Deac who often posts on this site. One of these days I would like to hook-up with Deac and take a test-ride on his Odin 28.

Yes, we've covered these other powersailors on this site before. But to just correct one inccorrect observation the Odin not only has an opening forward hatch but has three opening ports along the side ....with screens for godsakes !! . For you newbies to this thread, here's my review of the Odin from about two years ago when I first bought it.

I stand corrected. I've not seen one, but several closeup photos of private boats didnt' reveal either a forward hatch or side opening ports. Cold weather on photo day I guess. Those would be nice indeed in some circumstances at the dock.

I've got ports on each side of my M which open, and have screens. I paid extra for them, but it was worth it! The cross ventilation is needed in hot, humid Philly in the summer.
