2 stroke praises
My 2001 Nissan TLDI (Two stroke Low pressure Direct Injection) has run flawlessly for 3 1/2 years.
Tohatsu Lovin
Enough of this Tohatsu lovin...
There's got to be a Tohatsu out there that Died? (other than the resale value)
How about a Mercury? Any big foot stories there? (I would think you could shoot that motor and it will run another season)
Again this needs to be motor issues... Not Operator Error. If you fogot to put in oil and it siezed up that shouldn't count.

My favorite lemon is...
The 1st models of the Evenrude 2 stroke Ficht
I thought about purchasing one when they first came out a few years ago. I'm glad I didn't - Complaint 1 / Complaint 2. These were full of problems and numerous complaints. Envinrude does not sell them anymore because they were lemons.
A Quote:
OMCs two-stroke Ficht outboards have been plagued with problems since they were introduced in 1997 in response to Clean Air Act requirements to reduce hydrocarbon emissions. Ficht fuel injection technology was supposed to reduce emissions by 70% to 80% while increasing fuel efficiency, but early engines became fouled with abrasive soot when operated at low rpm levels. As a result, complete breakdowns occurred while engine hour meters were still registering in the single digits.
Many Ficht owners were sidelined as their engines went through repeated cycles of breakdowns, repairs, factory upgrades and breakdowns. Thousands of engines needed repairs, at a cost of about $1,000 each.

If I recall right, the Evinrude technology was a high pressure injection system while the Tohatsu is a low pressure injection system. I think the Tohatsu injection may be at the manifold as opposed to the combustion chamber. Sort of like a Throttle body injection like I have on my Suburban. Doing it at the combustion chamber is the best for efficiency but it sounds like it is technically hard to do in two stroke for some reason.

tohatsu motors
My tohatsu 1993 40 horse that I got with my 99 macx has been flawless for five and half years. Just change lower unit oil and plugs. Starts every time. Had to start it by hand three or four times, and it kicked right off. jim nolan
Nissan
Ihave the Nissan TLDI 50 2 stroke. TLDI stands for two stroke, low pressure, direct injection. This motor has been ultra reliable and has the added benefit of light weight/higher performance, 4-stroke fuel economy, and thin profile for easy transom access. It is the same proven Nissan/Tohatsu engine they have been building for over 20 years, low pressure direct injection added (less wear, cleaner burn). Less noisy than their earlier 2 strokes, it is still a bit noisier than a 4 stroke. This technology isn't used on their smaller 2 srokes becuz it requires an ECU. I'm springing for a 6hp 4 stroke nissan or tohatsu becuz it weighs the same as the 4 and 5hp (57 pounds).

Tohatsu/ gas
Just emptied my first gas tank this season, 6.5 gal.
Been out 6 times. Would have gotten more time but motored back 20 miles yesterday.
Speed was down though, could only get 12 mph, full ballast, 3 people against the wind.

I read recently in a boating mag that American outboard boat engine manufactures were complaining that the Japaneese are dumping their engines on the US making it very difficult for the Amercan Manufactures to compete.
I also very recently heard the same complaint made by Bedroom furniture manufactures in NC complaining that the Chineese are doing the same with their imported bedroom furniture.
Having grown up in NYS in a town that prided itself on furniture manufacturing as well as shoe and computers. I can feel both sides of this issue as years ago the NYS furniture manufacturing slipped away to NC.
Oh well back to the subject. I hear a lot of plus's going for Yamaha engines.
The jury is still out on my Suzuki the shop will be looking at it this week. I will keep my fingers crossed that it is something simple or stupid that I did.
