Actually, showing your "knickers" has become quite a fad here in the US. Showing that you have no "knickers" on gets even more attention in the celebrity world.
I prefer seeing their fenders out. Especially when the other scenery (buildings, bridges, etc.) is so nice.

The older I get, the less I care about what other people think. With the boat in a slip and the green lake slime growing on the fenders, I leave 'em out in lighter winds. hull, I even ride the Harley with white t-shirts now instead of black ones.
Trouble I have isn't removing them when we leave the marina. Instead, we sometimes forget to hang them when returning which can lead to problems. Light winds, we sometimes deliberately forget to remove them!
It gives the old salts something to talk about.
I read that Atlantic Salmon had returned to the Thames a few years ago after a long hiatus. Are they still getting salmon in the river or has pollution overtaken their recovery?
I'm about to embark on a truly brilliant project that will solve the fender storage problem on my Mac 26X and can also be adapted for use on almost any boat.
In fact it is so stunningly clever in the way it derives "form from function" (Ferdinand Porsche; 1972), I may need to patent the design before unleashing it on the sailing world.
I promise it will receive its world premiere in the mods section of this very website
Actually, I am thinking of putting a holder of sorts on the hatch cover that would allow the fenders to lie flat and then they would be a good cushion for sitting when fishing off the side of the boat. Have to work out boom/vang clearances but with the mast off, it looks good. Otherwise, I use a bowlin around the base of the lifeline stanchions to adjust the height needed and then when under way I raise the loop and flip it over the top to hold them up out of the water, works OK till we get to about 20+ degrees heel then they drag a little. If this embarrasses the more sophisticated owners, I will try and not do it around your yacht club when your there. Wouldn’t want to get people saying bad things about Macgregors.
