propeller for yamaha FT50

Post by geocat »

I got my new mac 26 last year This year I bought a new Suzuki 50 hp and I entered in the painful world of finding the right propeller. I had no previous experience with outboard motors (I was only sailing with sailboats). Not knowing this site I was expecting top speed around 20 knots (every body ha,ha) No matter what propeller I put I never exceed 13 knots and 5000 rpm (should be 6000 to 6500) The boat without ballast with 3 persons.

So I SELL the Suzuki and I buy a Yamaha FT50 (High Thrust) witch every body told me that with big foot are the best. It came with a propeller 11K At the back are two numbers 11 and 14 what thees numbers stand for? (there is no X between for example 11X14) The new motor gave 15 knots at 5000 rpm (still missing 500 rpm)

I asked for another propeller and I can buy a 13K (11 1/8X13) What is your opinions?

Geocat - both the propellor diameter and pitch are important..can you post the actual model number of the propellor you are using?

Your speed numbers arent way off with 3 people on an :macm:

Thank you for replying. I am new at this. Well in the front of the propeller has an K11 and at the back two numbers in separate locations 11 and 14 without the X between them. I know that a propeller K13 is 11 1/8 X 13 so I presume that mine is a 14X11. I don't Know which is the pitch and which is the diameter. I don't know what the model number is. Is there a number that I should search for?

I followed the factory recommendation and ordered a FT50, which is a mistake. I shall buy a FT60 at the same weight and similar price and with 60HP. K11 is the best for FT50.

My 26M is mooring at sea with new antifouling paint, speed with 2 persons and empty ballast 13 5/8 x 13 at max 4700 RPM, I can at most get 12 knots.

With 2 person and empty ballast 14 x 11 (K11) at 5700RPM, I can at most get 15 knots. With 6 person and full ballast, I can at most get 8 Knots.

After viewing hundreds of posting. I belief 13 Knot is the best performance that anyone can expect with a FT50 without ballast and 3 persons. I am still wondering why you cannot get 5500 RPM with K11, may be something wrong with your RPM meter or engine. If you really want faster, get a 70Hp or even 90Hp as many had proposed in previous postings. However, I found it difficult to cruise over 8 Knots unless the surface is very calm. So I would stay with the FT50.

geocat,
The main reason for using a Bigfoot outboard is that it can use a larger diameter prop, up to 14 inches. (The largest prop your Suzuki could fit was only 12 inches.) Our boats have so much surface and weight that the bigger props with more surface area produce big performance benefits ... as in more "pushing ability."

Sounds as if your current 11K prop is a 14x11. Props are usually described as (Diameter x Pitch), so your prop has a 14-inch diameter, with 11-inch pitch. That large-diameter prop (with lower pitch) will deliver your best possible performance.

The other prop you described, the 13K, you say has ~ 11-inch diameter with 13-inch pitch. That smaller diameter of only 11 inches would sacrifice the major benefit of your Bigfoot ... there's no reason to use smaller diameter and larger pitch (even your Suzuki could have used it).
If you want to try something different, look for a 14x10.

Thank you very much Frank and Andrew for replying. You both cleared the fog in my mind. Frank, the first think I wanted to do after the disappointing of Suzuki was to by a bigger motor. Then I discovered that the port police of my country would not allow it. I can only put a motor up to 50 hp. Isn't that so in your country?
Andrew is there the possibility that my boat is heavier than yours or this has nothing to do with the fact that I cannot get over 5000rpm?
I have on the boat: Standard rescue facilities (2 anchors big-small, 45 feet anchor chain, 6+1 life jackets, smoke machine, flares, fire extinguisher etc) small plastic refrigeration, 100 gallon plastic water tank(almost empty in testing), kitchen things for 4 persons, 6 bottles of water,a bag with tools, two batteries, two plastic fuel tanks, a small plastic boat for two persons (the smallest and lighter you can think), ropes and food that fits in a plastic bag.
Is that heavy? To think of it, I was planning to install electrical winch for the anchor.
Thank you for your time

Dear Geocat,

There is a limitation to M26M, this is for trailer and cheap (entry level). Since I moor it at sea, it is not the best sail boat for me. I am considering to change to a flatter, wider and faster Catamaran, such as a Tomcat 6.2 or 9.7, or Seawind 1000XL.
M26M inclines a lot, not much space on both sides for balancing, sailing speed is not fast, and difficult to sail single-handled. On the other hand, it is safer than a speed boat since it cannot capsize, while a small Tomcat 6.2 can capsize. I think most owner use motor than the sail.

Light weight is crucial. You definitely have too much weight. I only keep the essential in the boat. I did not even fill up the water storage. An electric winch will add more weight. I would consider whether this is the type of boat for you first before further investment.

Frank's suggestion to change to a 14 x 10 or 14 x 9 (pitch) is worth considering. However, I understand the smallest pitch that Yamaha provide is 14 X 11, so you need to search in internet for other OEM supplier.

Dear Andrew
Thank you because your reply exceeds the narrow angle of propeller size.
My idea of sailing is to go out with friends or family and spend a week in the sea. I hope this is the philosophy that this boat was made for. So I don't know how to do this without having at least the thinks I have in my boat. If the boat was made for day trips in calm lakes then I made a wrong choice. In my mind eclectic winch and auto pilot are necessary for sailing in the sea single handed, witch is a thing that I would like to have as an option. I enjoy sailing with 4 knts and with motor I would be happy to have 10-12 knts without the feeling that the motor will brake from top rpm. (Anyway I think this boat is not pleasant when speeds 15 knts). Is there a lot to ask from M26M?

I beg to differ..

Does it LOOK unpleasant at 28mph :?:

Dear Geocat,

If the size of M26M is what you want and accept the boat going at 10-12 knots, I think you have to right boat. (A catamaran normally cannot go faster than 10 knot with motor.) At present, you are just 10% under your highest speed (5000rpm vs 5500 rpm). As long as you stop pushing the gas after it reaches your maximum rpm, you did not waste fuel.
Forget 28mph, unless you have 90hp and the calm water that shown in Beene's video. If you want to fully use the last 10% power at maximum allowed speed, you have to order a lower pitch propellor from an OEM supplier.

over here in Europe we are restricted to a 50hp motor as part of the CE specification.

Nice video beene. In Greece this kind of water is rare.
Andrew: You and Frank have convinced me that there is no point to struggle to gain an extra mile. I will stick with this propeller and I will enjoy the boat.
I was puled from the Macgregor's advertising that the boat with 50hp motor goes up to 24 knts. I was thinking that is something wrong with my M26M or motor.

Hi geocat

Glad you enjoyed the video, was just trying to show any readers that the boat is quite smooth at higher speeds. :)

Have not had water like that since the end of June, good thing, better for sailing with higher winds.

I thought the manual said 22mph with a 50 :?:

24kts is 28mph, which it will do, but not with a 50.
