Santa brought me, among other things, a set of Gear-wrenches (SAE... I already had Metric), some nice monogrammed dress shirts and (finally) a HUGE garden shed so I can clear out the garage for another niffy vintage car.

Yes this is a small jib in-between the mast and the genoa jib.


This should help even the weight and extend my range.

I have not finished testing the additions, and will post it on the mod section when finished.

(i do have the in-progress pictures at the bottom of my web site mod section)

Last time I went out to sail, found one of the shrouds on the starboard side had parted, so saiing season ended early. Santa brought me a complete change of standing rigging including adjustable backstay.

I'd be interested in seeing these mods, thanks. What advantage do you think a cutter rig will get you?

Yes absolutely great mod. Looks simple and practical, I have the sail off my old sail board and want to set it up like you.
Q1

I am going to try and test the sail this weekend. The biggest hurdle is getting my Genoa around it when tacking.

I bought the sail from Bacon Sails… don’t know what it came off of. I bought a roller furler new from west marine… it was the smallest Harken makes. Originally I wanted to put in a self tacking track, but I am going to test it on the water before drilling into the deck. I have also attached a shock cord, about 7 feet to the clew of the genoa to help move it forward when the sheet is released to help it get around the new sail. I still need to test it on the water.

I have also rigged the sail so I can lift it and attach it to the side of the mast if I don’t want to use it.

Below my Genoa I have a line running through a block and attaching to the top of the new jib. The jib stay is attached to a boom bail with a gold snap shackle and there is about 1.5 feet of wire going from the boom bail to the top of the jib. So I can pull on the line which will lift the whole furler-sail rig up about 1.5 feet and then I can attach the bottom of the jib to the boom bail at the bottom of the mast. That puts the roller furled jib up against the mast.

The biggest advantage is keeping Konig and First Step (who has a sail like this) from passing me

I will post more, with pictures... when I finish testing.

Erik,

With all the cool stuff (ie. weight) you have on Knot Shore you will need a lot more sail than that to keep me from passing you.

We won't mention HP in this discussion...

The admiral gave me a pair of waterproof Bushnell binoculars with the illuminated compass that Doupirate suggested. They are awesome!

Santa said I was a good lad, and blessed me with a new Jib... We are going to retire the old Genny for awhile. Also got more grab handles to mount around the boat. These help the Admiral get around when we are heavy heel'n.
