Macgregor 65 sighted in the BVI's

Post by Rich Smith »

Hi Folks - You likely won't remember me...I sold my :macx: about a year ago and moved to a Catalina 320. However, I'll always have a love for the Mac!

My wife and I chartered a boat down in the British Virgin Islands a couple weeks back and what should I see sneaking into Sopers Hole but a Mac 65!!! Thought I'd share the pictures...her name is Liberty Belle

Cheers and Fair Winds to all!

Hi Rich,
Certainly remember you. I don't get on the board often anymore, but back when you got your C-320, I was a daily poster.

ANYWAY, I'm pretty sure I saw this M-65 moored out @ St. Thomas in January '07 when there on a BIIIIIG boat cruise (cruise ship).

Fairly sure the name was " Liberty Belle " (memory, second thing to go) :?

It was a pilothouse model and the name placement and script was the same. I'd be 90% sure it's the same boat.

Interestingly, I was just talking to a guy (via e-mail 20 minutes ago) about bareboating in BVI. Got back the results of my experience resume and they said I could bareboat a 36 footer. Cool! Guess I can add that to my bucket list :)

Best Breezes

How about this for unlikely:
We bought our Mac 26X in San Diego last April and promptly shipped it to Croatia, to a small marina near my hometown, Makarska. That part of Dalmatia is not that popular with sailing folks and this particular marina is small and out of the way.
Imagine MY surprise when, on our first day there, I saw a MacGregor 65 docked a few spots from our 26X.
I'm guessing it must be the only one in the Adriatic!
Left a couple days later and never returned....

Steve - I highly recommend that you add the BVI's to the bucket list! It's really great sailing, lots of interesting little islands to explore, no tides to deal with and well sheltered in the channel...
The BVI's are like ocean sailing on training wheels which is perfect for my wife and I since we sail on Lake Ontario... :P We're saving up to go again in a few years...

Ray- Sorry, I didn't see where she was from...

Have a great summer guys!
Rich.

Holy Cr@p!
I saw that boat 3 weeks ago in the BVI's. I pointed it out to the Admiral and told her what I thought it was. Could't get close enough to be certain. Can't remember where I saw it -maybe it was when we went through the cut at Sopers Hole.

Thanks Rich,
This is also the suggestion my screener made. Great place for one's first baraboat trip. I really loved the area, when on the cruise, but one doesn't get much exploring time when traveling by cruise ship.
Everytime we came into a port and I saw all the private sailboats in the harbor, I sort of wished one of them was mine and I could sail off into the sunset on it.

Take care and best breezes:)
