ICW

Post by TerryB89 »

I plan to cruise down the ICW in Dec from Jax to Miami, I hope to go out into the ocean sometimes to sail on the way down. Would it be a good idea to put the mast down while in the ICW so I dont have to have the bridges open or wait for one to open?

Yes and no. With your GPS you can time the bridge openings so you do not have to "waite" at the bridges but it will still take you the same amount of time. Oh, about 1 day more. Lots of BIG boats to look at and a few nice places to anchor.

Some folk in my Marina have tall fixed masts, and they travel the ICW with no problems. One retired family takes an annual ICW vacation trip, overnighting as a transient at Marinas along the way.

I was sailing in the ICW 2 weeks ago, and the size of the tankers, cargo ships, etc. are amazing to see -- "real intimidating" to a 26' sail boat.

No need to drop the mast....timing is helpful...so pace yourself....monitor the bridge channel .....always make your request to the bridge tender....many bridges are "On Demand" only.....friendly & polite goes a long way as you make your way.....be ready to do "donuts"....good music system in cockpit helps!.....relax & enjoy the surroundings... and the journey!
