Penobscot Bay Cruising

Post by Harry van der Meer »

About 11 more days to go to for a week of cruising Penobscot Bay, Maine.

We will be launching Saturday morning 7/17 at Rockland, Maine. I have been told PB is one of the most beautiful cruising grounds.

Any recommendations for quiet and remote anchor locations? We would love to be alone in a quite cove.

Your recomnmendations would be much appreciated.

Harry,
Many places to tuck into...
Try Kent Cove across the bay at North Haven....we anchored there one night alone back in behind the rock with the seals....if wind from south you can go across to Carver cove....tucking back into Winter harbor is another good one. Over off Stonington and the Deer Island Thorofare you can find many quiet spots like Camp is, or any of the many spots around it. You'll want to do the Eggemoggin Reach...Bucks Harbor good shelter at north end....there are so many great places you won't have any problem finding a quiet spot at end of the day. We'll be going back next year...enjoy!

Thanks Dave,

I did not think anyone was going to respond anymore. Glad you did. We will be leaving Sunday morning early for the 230 mile trip from our home in MA. We hope to be in Rockland by noon. I have spoken to the Harbor Master. For $5 we can launch our Mac and park truck and trailer for the entire week. If the weather is bad (which it should not) we can anchor right in the harbor, otherwise we will be off to one of the islands. I have been extremely busy at work so we are really looking forward to a week of sailing and exploring.

I will post how we made out when we get back.

Regards,

Harry

Hi Harry,
I just happened to open an older issue of Long Island Boating world afew minutes ago.... to a little blurb about cruising in Penobscot Bay.

I don't have a scanner currently so I took a pic of the article and uploaded it to my site:
pg1: http://www.racephoto.com/boat/penobscott1.jpg
pg2: http://www.racephoto.com/boat/penobscott2.jpg

These are 2 rather large files, near 1mb each, but I wanted them to be readable.

It's not terribly in depth, but I suppose every bit of info helps.

Have a great trip!
Gail

PS: Right after I posted this I noticed the URL referenced at the end of the article.....the text is also online here:

I thought the pics int LIBW article were awesome tho :-)
