Screw on Sail Slug Shackles

Post by ESPERANZA »

Has anyone tried the screw on sail slug shackles from sailrite? I know I read somewhere that they were a really slick way to install slugs on a main sail but, this weekend I had several people tell me not to put any kind of screw holes through a sail.

I installed them on mine last year. Have run the boat in the Bahamas & Tortugas in some rough conditions. No problems with the screw on slugs so far. Got them from Sailrite. I arranged them so I can use the factory reef without any additonal lines or having to drop any slugs out of the slot.--did some close calculations.

sailrite talked me into the slugs that require grommets.
it's a more professional application.
it eliminates worries about sail ripping/damage.
i purchased everything from sailrite and installed myself.
12 small stainless steel grommets every 20 inches.
very simple process.

It's the screws through the sail that have me a little concerned. Just thought I'd check with the pros on this site for thier input. Thanks... 8)

I am having slugs professionally installed as we speak. The boat is at the sailmaker now. They are sewing them in. I will have pictures of the way they install them soon.

I am sure screw in slugs will work. But the thought of them professionally installed makes me feel better.

i, too, questioned screwing into my new sail.

here is the install options/instructions on the sailrite web site.
http://www.sailrite.com/Tips/slug%20installation.htm
of the 5 options...number 4 (slug & shackle & grommet) is what I used.

again...the most professional way is sewing or grommets.
i don't sew and refused to pay someone to do it for me.
installing grommets is a "do-it-yourself" job and sailrite provides all the items at a resonable price.
