Compass bubbles... I don't get it???

Post by Loala »

I bought a brand new compass and inspected it. Could find no bubbles. Looked great and I was on cloud nine!

I set it out in the boat for about an hour with some sun and now it has a 1/4" bubble in it.

Why did this happen and how can I get rid of it?

Anyone have the scoop on why these ugly things appear?

TIA.

Don't worry it is normal to have small bubbles in liquid filled compasses. As the liquid heats up it releases some of the gas dissolved in the liquid (gases are less soluble in liquids as the temperature rises) hence the bubble. Unfortunately it doesn't work very well the other way round so it won't dissolve again even if you put it in the freezer. It doesn't affect the operation of the compass.
