Mac 26 M/X and Hunter theEDGE

Post by Doug W »

Has anyone seen a Mac 26 and Hunter EDGE 27 sail with/against each other yet? If so, how did the performance compare?

Do you want to wait for that race? Big clue going in: sail area to weight ratio, ballast to weight ratio, rotating mast vs "the old style", daggerboard vs centerboard, 3rd generation powersailor design vs the 1st try. Lastly, the most telling of all, one of these boats goes 10% faster using a 15% smaller motor. How about the hat beam deck construction which we found weighed about 200 lbs less than the balsa core deck we used to use. Advantage; MacGregor. One little item, the Hunter was first produced 5 years after the latest Mac. Don't know if that will give the Hunter any help but I would not bet much on it.
You could speed up most sailboat designs by: epoxy/cloth instead of mat/roving/resin which will save a little bit of the weight (at the same strength) but also making the boat about the same amount thinner which makes the boat flex more (not so good) and considerable higher cost. Use a carbon fiber mast which is much lighter at same strength but not as reliable and much much greater cost. Give up a lot of the headroom for a lower C.G. Seat the crew much lower (lower C.G. again but no rear bunks). They did not do any of these things for their boat and I can think of no other speed producers for a powersailor. I can't see anything to close the performance gap between the boats Did Hunter make a smaller rear bunk? I don't think that will help much.

I'll volunteer my boat to race against the Hunter Edge!!!

If the factory is up to it, I'll make the challenge!

However, I'm not a competent Captain. I'll be happy to crew, or sit and watch. I'm not totally "rail meat". But, Mike's "Concept Boat", aka, "Sea Eagle" deserves a real sailor in a race.

Any takers??

I spent an hour on the edge 3 weeks ago.

there is one in vancouver BC, at the hunter dealer, still being outfitted and trimmed. Anyone know of a interested buyer that might be willing to schedule his evaluation sail at the same time shane or terry might have a boat nearby??

Ours is laid up now till April. I don't normally have my boat up False Creek (or are they at Coal Harbour, I can never remember who is where), I seasonally moor it at Point Roberts. However, that might be fun trailer run . I would certainly look to Terry as being a better sailor to truly compare the two boat more equally. However, I've been learning tons crewing for real smart helmsman out on a SanJuan 21 for the Fall (and now Winter) IYC race series; too bad all the snow cancelled last Saturdays race :( . I'm happy sailing in 4c weather :? , but can't wait to get BoB out and see if I don't do a little better this year.

Regards,
Shane

I'm down. Rusalka is ready to race the Edge. Single-handed or w/crew. Might be a bit unfair though. I got some turbo-charged mods working for me. :D Can you say TOAST? 8)

hmmm,
lets see..... did I see you guys out racing Dec 13 outside false creek ?/ I was taking the hunter out for sea trials on that cold and clear day...... had good wind out in the middle. and the sun was a fine addition.

uh oh....... you are checking out the dark side.......(racing)
There is a 12 step(bottle) solution to that..... labatts, molson, etc..

I was watching the weather in western Washington and any body with any boat on your side of the state is lucky with 9 inches of rain yesterday and snow melt flooding has shut all rail and highways down. I would be living on my boat to keep my feet dry and I will take some of the ect. you talked about.

Perhaps it is being outfitted for the upcomming Vancouver Int'l BoatShow Feb 5-9/09. I'd love to view it and will if I can.
A recent buyers viewpint:

Another review:
http://www.sailnet.com/forums/general-d ... -sail.html
It can't be that bad...

On edit I noted on a review that the Edge has a 333 sq.ft. sail plan including the 110% jib, that would be about the same as an M with the Musclehead, similar sail design too. No mention of a Genoa.

The 2nd review seems to be realistic. The first sounded like it was written by Hunter's marketing dept. Judging by the pix, the Mac :macm: looks much better IMHO. 16 kts with a 75HP etec is not impressive. I do better than that with my 50 HP etec. I like the concept of the swimming platform and the single daggerboard style rudder, but I"m sure that just kills the aft berth. Advantage MacGregor.

Ok, I'm in. If every one who answered the roll call would just send me $1,000 cash, I'll buy an Edge and trailer it to any body who wants to race me on their own sailing grounds.
