Trading in an old boat?

Post by Sibyl »

Hi again,
Well, I was wondering.....do Macgregor dealers take trade-ins? :)

I am trying to sell my 1978 Silverton and someone asked me why I didn't trade it in. I never thought about it since I never even looked at new boats when I bought my first boat.

I realize that I might get more $$ selling it myself but the headache factor is pretty high.

Thanks
Gail

Blue Water Yatchs is Seattle took our old Bayliner Bucaneer in as a trade in. Todd gave me a fair price for it. Used it as part of our down payment.

I offered our 17 foot Invader as a trade in to Havencraft, but Art said they really had no market for 20 year old powerboats. Can't say I blame him; the boat probably wasn't worth $1000 anyway.

I've since given it to my son, (I know, but he wanted it :) ) Interestingly, it hasn't even made it from my yard to his yet. :P Maybe I'll do him a favor and deliver it.

Thanks for the replies....just got back from a little trip checking out a few local boat ramps. :)

I'm leaving for a week in Florida (Panama City) tomorrow. I'll give the local Mac dealer another try when I get back. At least it's an option I had not considered before.

:D :D :D

When my son asked to "borrow" an old windsurf board I had hanging in the garage, I agreed *only* if it never came back!

Frank,
I was wondering if I could "borrow" that Suzuki 115 that you have on the back end of your boat? I will "lend" you mine as a spare for "a while". Happy sails, Tony

The 115 Suzuki is working out great on my '96X since I got my transom reinforced properly. It will tear a rudder bracket right off if you accidently leave one down. But Billy's 140 is still bigger than mine. :o

Mark,
Beggers can not be choosers but if Billy is out there and you feel generous then I am game. I am going down to Charleston in a few weeks so Billy's would be right on the way. What time should I be there to pick it up and trade? Happy sails, Tony

Sorry, Tony. I love my Suzi 140 like family. :D :D I wouldn't let it out of my sight. But since you'll be coming by here on your way to Charleston, I'll be glad to tease you with a ride.

Billy,
I am trailering mine to Charleston to take a friend of mine for a ride. I would feel like I was cheating on my boat if I rode someone else's boat and mine was watching me sail away. I might take you up on it the next time I come down? I have a feeling that like family you might get mad at it for some stupid reason, so let me ease some of that pressure off of you. Happy sails, Tony

Gail,

If you are so inclined, you may want to try Ebay. I sold both my old boats (16 ft jetboat, 27 ft sailboat) on Ebay for decent prices. It took a bit of time to design good ads, but it was well worth it in the end. I didn't have very good response in the traditional paper ads (newspapers, sailboat trader, etc.)...which just goes to show you that a lot of boat buyers are into the Internet now. And my jetboat sold for about $1200 more than a local offer I had on it, so, it was well worth a few hours of ad crafting. My wife found my 26X in the online boat trader..it had been miscategorized as a 26S but we knew it was an X due to the price difference (X's sell for at least twice as much as S's usually).
