2 weeks of sanding. buffing and polishing gives a 6 year old blue hull a BRAND NEW look! There remains 2 scratches which have been filled 3 times with gel coat and will get sanded and buffed ....next year cause I am sailing now! woopee!!!!

Just curious, how well would automotive compound work for restoring the shine on fiberglass as opposed to light sanding?

On the parts of my hull that were not scratched I just applied auto compound with an industrial buffer which heated the compound up enough to make it do its job.

No need to sand where there are no scratches, then I applied a finishing product. I started with a no water spray wash and wax product

.... but ended up using an automobile nano wax cause it gave a better shine.

p.s. I was surprised at the great effect and little effort spot wet sanding with 2000 paper and nano waxing did to get rid of the stains especially on the white gel coat

I am using 2 cheap Big Box (Menard's) buffers ( 6" and 10" )and seeing great results with them. The two of them combined cost me less than $60. They are light and easy to handle . I do have both a Huge Heavy Electric Commercial Buffer Polisher and as well 2 air powered units. But all of those are either
"the commercial electric , is much heavier" the air powered turns a lot faster, messier and needing much more control ............ There is No need or desire to burn anything in or on . For Me ... I need just move a lot faster and easier, than hand rubbing. For you young guys maybe its no problem, but I am just too old to fight and strain anymore than absolutely, necessary.
I am using 3M rubbing compound in the small black bottle. I am using Aurora anti fouling wax from Boot stripe down and a Good Car Wax for above that line . The 6" buffer is doing wonders to that Black Stripe with the compoiund and wax.... sad part is, it will have to be done again in 6 months or so.

I have come to the same conclusion. Of course It will not take long next time cause I will not have 6 years worth of scratches on the hull and in the future I will be more careful about scratching my beautiful blue hull.

What a great name for a can of wax. :D

Thanks for that information on auto compound. I figure there is less chance of me getting carried away and doing serious damage with compound.
The thought of trusting myself with sandpaper on my beautiful boat frightens me. :o
