Venture 25 with new Main and Genoa

Post by offline »

Hello!

I just bought and installed a new Genoa, Main Sheet and a CDI Roller Furling for my 1975 Macgregor Venture 25. The sails cost me more than the boat but I think it's a love affair on my part. I had some pictures taken this weekend of her maiden voyage with the new sails. The sails were bought from http://thesailwarehouse.com . I had Jim over there add the blue cloth to the genoa. The main is fully battoned.

If you want to see more pictures you can go to... http://photobucket.com/offlinetn

I just wanted to show them off and share with everyone my new excitement.

The name off the boat is "Offline" and is located in Chattanooga, TN and we are sailing on the Tennessee River.

P.S. I also had to add all of the deck hardware to handle a genoa since this particular boat was only equiped to run with a jib.

Thanks!! One is the Ireland Flag and the other is the 10th Confederate "Sons of Erin" Irish Battle Flag. I like to swap my flags out quite a bit. Through 4th of July I ran the American Flag and a cool pirate flag. In August I will fly the Tennessee VOL Navy flag on top and my girlfriend whois a Alabama fan will make me run the Alabama Crimson Tide flag with it. College football is huge in the South.

Actually I am just yanking your chain...

I and the Missus are both Golden Eagles from Southern Mississippi (Class of '87) and my son is currently a Yellow Jacket (or is it Rambling Wreck) from Georgia Tech (Class of 12...or 13...or 13.5 :? ). But our "home" state is now Florida and most of the folks around my parents are Gator fans so they have kinda/sorta become Gator fans...so we kinda/sorta pretend to be Gator fans...when we are down there during football season.

I actually despised the Gators when they had the "old ball coach"...he was just an @$$. But their new coach seems to have much more class...and of course that Tebow kid is a pretty good ball player.

I was actually a big Vols fan back when it was "Peyton's Place"...

But I can't say much nice about the Tide... :D

Cheers,
Jim

Well you know how us southerners like our football and how sensitive we are about our teams. I am originally from Florida and grew up being a big NFL fan but living in Tennessee is all about NCAA, so I adopted the VOLS. Its quite fun to give everyone else a hard time in the NCAA. Also, since I am on a lake most people are power boaters and I can fly my flags bigger and higher than anyone else.

That is a beautiful boat you got there, especially that rig! Sails look freakin' great! :D I am jealous. 8) What kind of rudder you got there? It does not look stock at all. Nice bimini too.

I should also add with regard to your statement about having installed the hardware on deck to accommodate the genoa that I hope you first drilled bigger holes, epoxied them over and then drilled the correct sized oles for your through-bolts. Using silicon, RTV, etc. to "seal" the deck hardware will not cut it I am afraid. It might get you by for a while but might not. The last thing we need is water getting underneath the glass shell into the wood core.

I just drilled the holes and used 5200 glue to seal everything. So anytime you cut into the deck you epoxied it with what? Then drilled into the epoxy? Sounds like a great idea.

Thanks for the tip!

What are the dimensions of the mainsail, and what did it cost? My stock Venture mainsail is so large the boom sits too low. I've taken to sailing with a reefed main for comfort (and safety). Thanks.

Loyd, can you post the measurements of your sail? I have a V24 and the sails are supposed to be 25 vs 24 10 for your boat. Needless to say, I'm looking for a deal of V 24 sails.

I had the same problem with the sails that came with the boat when I bought it last year. I bought the Fully Battoned OEM sails for $695 you can get their Standard OEM sail for $595. I can now sail with the pop-top up.
