Got my new 26X....Finally

Post by madguy »

Hi Guys..

Well its finally happend, ive done the deal and now im the proud owner of a 26X.

Its one of the first one's a 1995 (but its all i could afford)

Picking it up saturday and the first thing on the agenda is a good power wash to get rid of the crap as it hasn't been used for over a year.

One question,,what lock do you use to secure the motor to the hull?? it doesn't have one at the moment..

Congratulations! Don't feel bad about the age. Mine is a 1998 and I have been perfectly happy with it for the past 7 years. There's plenty of room for customizing within the price difference you would have otherwise paid for a brand new M. You seem to have a roller furler, a good danforth anchor, a decent engine, a solar panel, a bimini, and even an alcohol stove. Not bad!
The engine is bolted to the cockpit. I never thought about securing it otherwise.
Have fun!

Im well happy with the Bimini its also got a matching spray hood. from what i can gather the Bimini is about £1600 over here.

The engine is (so ive been told) only three years old and last year was completly overhauled by a dealer and proffesionaly fitted though not been used since, its also a four stroke.

The reason im concerned about securing it is because a guy at a nearby club had his stolen about six months ago, everyone thought it was gone until someone spotted a piece of rope on the surface of the lake and when it was hauled up there was the engine.

After speaking to a friend he said that the insurance company wont payout if the engine is not secured, If they cut the locks off or cut out the back of the transorm then the insurance say that you have taken all reasonable steps to secure it and will pay for everything.

Not sure if this is true but want to be safe. an engine like this must cost in the region of £6000.

Cheers

Cleaning up the boat will be fun...cleaning up a Mac-X isnt all that bad, and she'll sparkle when finished.
Seems that the interior cushions are missing, but no problem, they're fun to design, and remake.
I noticed that the rudders appear to be an upgrade, and the bottom job looks new.
Overall, "White Queen" looks fine.

Congrats ! ! And, happy sailing.

No matter how well you secure the engine (say, with a chain attached to another piece of hardware) an eager thief could still get it easily, if he really wants to. All the metal pieces are bolted to the hull. The hull is made of fiberglass; you can cut through it easily in seconds flat with a dremmel or even with an electric jigsaw. Seems to me that in your example, the thieves attempted to remove the bolts on the water. The engine must be heavy, they couldn't handle the weight and plunk it went to the bottom. In order to remove the bolts, you need access to the nuts on the other side--or slice through the cockpit . You might want to talk to your insurance agent and make it clear what they want: it seems kind of silly to expect a car owner to chain his four wheels to the car only because a thief might easily remove the four wheels overnight with two jacks, a dozen of bricks, and a wheel wrench. The bolts that attach the engine to the cockpit should be enough, to my mind. I would worry more about the possibility of having the entire boat stolen, towed to some remote part of the lake (they won't be able to trailer it without a Mac trailer) and cannibalized there. In that case, no amount of securing would help

Welcome aboard... nice boat ! !
They clean up pretty easily. Mine had three inches of water inside after a hurricane.
Like March said you have the major things, not the least of which is a nice outboard.
That Yammy represents a big chunk of the boat's value and yours looks to be in good shape.
I'm much happier in the Yammy club than I was in the Honda club.
The lower engine bolt heads are inside the boat so it's pretty secure, but trust me there is no "securing the motor" short of parking in inside some kind of secure facility. In Florida these buzzards will saw the stern of the boat off to get a motor. We think of security as a dog in the yard and a 12 gauge on the mantle. :)
Kickers in the 6 to 15HP range are more easily stolen because they're a one man lift. These 50s are a little tougher to lug around and throw into a truck.
Now go have some fun!

It looks a little dirty but nothing that a little soap and bleach can't clean up.
Nice boat with some nice extras.
RE: Motor
I wouldn't worry about it. If someone really wants to steal it, don't make it too hard for them. If they can unbolt that bugger and lift it, it's better than having your transom sawed off. That's why you buy insurance.

We purposely bought an older X (97) just because of access and other issues. you'll love it and $$$ left over to upgrade.
The last picture you posted of the interior reminded me why we replaced the hatch with tinted 1/4 inch plexiglass. Makes it less clausterphobic.

One of the other mod we did and wouldn't be without is Duanne Dunn's galley mod.

Never even thought about securing the motor to the boat and don't think you should worry about it either 8) Unless of course you live in a high crime area and at that, who is going to pick up the motor and run with it :? Unless maybe you are using a 10hp :)

Cleaning and modding the boat is half the fun in my opinion. I spent three months redoing and cleaning my X before I even put it in the water. So Have Fun :!: I hope you'll be half as proud of yours as I am of mine, and more so when you have clean, polished and fixed it up yourself  This is the real chance to make the boat your own :!:

All my engine bolts are positioned where the nuts are on the inside. Looks cleaner and can not be easily removed.

You boat will look much better after clean up.

Good Job Mad Guy your 1995 looks a lot better then my 1999 when I first got it. The only thing I would say is start setting aside some money for replacing the steering set up. Change to stainless on the rudder linkage and holders and a universal plantary gearbox. Dont have to do it right away but the day will come you have to so start setting a side money now a little at a time. Plantary Gearbox and cable run you about $200 USD, stainless linkage I dont know the 1999 came with it.

Looking at the interior shot which shows a removable companionway ladder, which wasn't introduced until around 2000 leads me to think that unless the PO did the mod that I would like to do, your boat may be newer than a 1995. My 1998 came with the removeable step which sits on the hump with the vent. If I ever come across a ladder like yours, the hump is history.

How much you paid for your 26X ?
I bought mine in my area (very uncommon for South Padre Island, TX area), and paid $10,000 dlls.,
It is a 2001 26X with a Tohatsu 9.8 hp 2 stroke, with everything working except, 2 batteries, Jib sail, motor remote controls, and lights
I did a lot of cleaning since it was sitting outdoors for more than 3 years.
