Etec 50 basic service

Post by Mac26Mpaul »

Hi all
My 2007 Etec 50 just had its first service, about $700 dollars Australian (pretty close to US700 right now). Now I dont mind paying this every three years for the major service, but the service guy reckons that even though Evinrude say these things should be serviced every three years, the shop still recommend a minor service every year. Asked how much that will be, he replied, $240. Asked what that involves he said, check fuel filter, grease grease points, change gear oil!

I think I can manage that... Cant find a service manual for the Etec on the net and not prepared to pay the crazy price involved in ordering one from the shop. Dont even know how much gear oil these things should take or if any special oil is required?

Can someone please give me a run down on changing the gear oil, and any other tips in doing the yearly basic service on an Etec, or does anyone know where I could find an Etec service manual on the net?

Cheers

Being new to boat owning I was amazed to find that outboard manuals don't seem to be freely available to download as a pdf like every other manual I have ever wanted, that said I wouldn't service any engine without a service guide, I decided to invest in a generic skippers outboard manual along with a Mercury service maual from amazon, total cost £30 GBP, as you said a yearly service can be 5 or 6 times this, they both give me enough confidence to feel i can correctly change oil, plugs, filters and grease it every year, so in the long run for me it's worth it. :macx:

2X on the etecownersgroup. The forum for 50/60 hp is I-2. Evenrude requires a 3 year dealer inspection for warranty purposes. I will take my 08 in this winter for the 3 yr. Local dealer quoted me 2 hrs labor plus parts. I want to see the plugs before I replace them as it will increase the cost by $50.00. With the low hrs we put on our engines, I am not inclined to do an annual program.

Thanks gents, the Etec owners group is just the ticket.

Actually your probably right Bob. I doubt the gear oil needs replacing every year, just putting a grease gun on the nipples every year or so is probably all it needs. I was amazed when the mechanic told me in three years my engine had done just 63 hours. 29.3 percent of that was at Idle and around 12 percent at full throttle. The rest was basically in the cruising range which would be about 8 to 10 knots in the boat. He said the engine has had a very easy life. 8)

Mac26MPaul:
My 2007 Etec-60 cost AU$540 last year for a "major service" (including a "precautionary replacement" of the impeller). This year's "minor service" cost about AU$270.
It seems a lot, and its a shame that service manuals are not readily available. However, the computer report on the engine' activity is quite comprehensive and is good for peace of mind.

Thanks for posting the info on the E-Tec owners groups. Very useful! :)

Hey Oskar,
Sounds like I got ripped then. Actually it was $720 but that included a new oil pump which apparently retails for somewhere around $700. I was getting a "no oil" warning. It turned out that it was just a computer glitch caused by a faulty oil pump. BRP supplied the oil pump free as apparenty this was a common issue from ETECs of that period. However I had to pay for the install of the oil pump. Apparenty the cost of the major service (includes impeller, thermostat, plugs etc) would have been around $680.

Each to his own but - Mostly these motors are on Fishos boats, and with the amount of work they likely do, fair enough on a yearly check, but on my boating budget, I just cant justify $250 or so for a gear oil change/fuel pump check, after 20 or 30 hours use each year.

I have an etec 90 on my 26M and the more I learn about it the more I am impressed

Did you know that;

-it will run without a battery. After a pull start without a battery it will run. No other marine engine will do this that I know of. Aircraft engines are the only other engines that I know of that can do that. Nice to have on a sailboat
-It will self fog itself using its oil reservoir
