Identify that boat
ok so I will start by saying Hello to everyone as I am a new member so Hello. next on my massive agenda has specifically to do with my vessel.
Recently I purchased a 1971 Mac 26 foot swing keel. now I have yet to turn in the title stuff etc until I sort out some specific issues.
On visual inspection:
I have a boat that from bow to stern not measuring anything extra is 25 feet, including bow railing and engine mount/ rudder likely 26 feet easily. it is a swing keel there is NO water ballast there is not a tank to be had on the vessel. the interior is a baby blue with like a weird 70's era wallpaper. I can say that the mast does not appear to be consistent with that year of mac and could have been changed/ appears to be newer with a bad paint job on it. I havnt measured the mast but it is longer than the boat by several feet so it may be a 28 or 30 foot mast some of the cleats are that weird material that looks like etched wood some are aluminum the pullys are that weird material and the winch drums also contain material of this type as well. I have not gone through the running rigging terribly well but what appears to be the down draw and outdraw assembly is also that weird material
The title:
the title claims I have a 1971 Mac S hull which is swing and also claims it is 26 feet.
The hull number: Which is on the reg and title only (this is consistent with the year the title claims) However I put the hull number into http://www.boathistoryreport.com and here is what it says: HIN: nmz007901181 Model Year: 1981 Certification Year: 1981 (November) Manufacturer: NEW MEXICO HOMEMADE BOATS Manufacturer City/State: NM
no clue if I should trust that site or not and have heard that this was something commonly done during the 80's as a simple way to retitle older vessels that had been off the radar and had HIN. (since they didnt start requiring that from the factory until 1972) this boat has been around in no small way. When scraping 20 years of registration decals I found a 1990 reg sticker from New York and I am in California.
To be honest I have put this up in two separate sections of the sailboatowners.com forum and I have spoken to BWYachts (they supply macgregor with parts) and everyone seems baffled including one of the higher ups over at BWYachts.
Honestly its grating my nerves because Im working on the bottom and the keel is covered in fiberglass or some weird material which is poor shape and Im trying to figure out if I need to repair it, I do see rust stains from within which concerns the hull out of me.
Here are all the photos I have of the boat currently please excuse the stages etc ive been working on sanding and priming her this week

Re: Identify that boat
From the info you now have given you have a 1981 boat, year of manufacture. The type of boat you have is NOT a MacGregor boat. The manufacturer you gave lists New Mexico handmade. MacGregor has never been located in New Mexico. You may have been given wrong info when you bought the boat and you may have wrong info on the paper. When we looked at the pictures the boat just does not have the right look for any year of MacGregor. Sorry.

Re: Identify that boat
looks an awful lot like the mac 24 of that era to me the deck over the bow section of the cabin as well as the portholes all appear to be of that year the only problem is the boat is too long. I dont know how I could have been 'supplied the wrong info' how often is the pinkslip wrong?

Re: Identify that boat
Where I live Mac26m and X trailers are not allowed on the road but there is a loophole. We just need to get them certified as " homemade" (???) and so all M and X powersailer trailers are registered as homemade. Perhaps, as you said, there is some shonky thing like that going on ???

Re: Identify that boat
possibly mac26paul but the problem remains that in just looking at the vessel no one can seem to identify the make not even in some sort of majority basis

Re: Identify that boat
In order to be assigned a hull number it has to be permanently affixed to the boat
Most of the time when the HIN information conflicts it means the boat is stolen

Re: Identify that boat
I doubt the boat is stolen or stolen in any recent time where it is going to matter the boat was built prior to hin numbers being a requirement 1971

Re: Identify that boat
Well, its pretty clear it isnt a Mac (based on Cheryls assessment...which I would trust) and your title says 1971 Mac....
NY state (my home) keeps excellent records but I would not advise you to check with them, given that conflict. They prosecute.

Re: Identify that boat
well yeah the title says 71 mac the titles hin says new mexico home made in 81 and the boat hasnt been registered in NY since 1990 and is currently registered in Ca with all documentation. I keep hearing people saying stuff like stolen and prosecute I gotta be honest Im not looking for hearsay Ive already spoke to Blue Water Yachts the company that supplies Mac with all of their parts and confirmed that 1971 boats WERE NOT required to have a hin number yes I repeat NOT REQUIRED to have an hin its was not until 1972 that boats were required to place an hull number which would be the year AFTER this boat was produced.
Before having this boat I built myself a Baja bug from the ground up and I have since seen every type of dmv mistake on the books from years to mismatched vins etc the only reason I care is because I need to figure out how to rig the boat and it would be nice to know everything I can about the vessel beyond that I highly doubt anyone stole this 40 year old project boat

Re: Identify that boat
I have tried to click on your flicker link, but it says page not found. Get the link working or paste a pic so we can see it. Chances are, someone on here might know what kind of boat you have. It seems like I've seen a list somewhere (probably here)that listed all the boats MacGregor has produced and also the years that the production ran for each model. Regarding your title that says 71 Mac, the early MacGregor boats were manufactured and sold under the "Venture of Newport" brand name from the 60's until 1977.
Look up Roger MacGregor on Wikipedia and you can see the models he has produced. The Venture model numbers start with a "V" and the Macs Start with an "M". All of the 26's are M's. The 25ft was made under both designations, and is in the sailboat hall of fame.

Re: Identify that boat
my appologies here try this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/48918956@N ... 795236895/
I remeasured the boat and from bow to stern im getting 24 feet soo with the rudder and bow rail that explains the 26 feet on the title however the boat looks exactly like a mac 24 from that year I just cant find the blasted hin number on the boat. tomorrow im going to check the center side of the floor stingers but ive looked in all of the usual places and I see nothing

Re: Identify that boat
The "Venture of Newport" name only applies to the 23' cutter. The others are just "Ventures" and were made in 17, 21, 22, and 25 foot models.sailsurfski wrote:

Re: Identify that boat
ok so Ive been researching and checked a few other spots and still no hull number
-floor stringers aft (behind) the hatch to the bulkhead that separates the quarter berths looked top port and starboard side of the stringer and nothing
-behind electrical panel that sits on the starboard side or (dinette side) and nothing **I dont know how deeply the number would be etched but there is pain here so maybe the number is hidden but ive only read in by one person finding their number in that location and it was a V 17 not a Mac 24**
- Aft (rear) storage this section is compartmentalized from the quater berth bulkhead to the stern there is equipment here as well as floatation foam and creepy crawlies so I cant yet climb in but ive put my head in and I haven't seen a number anywhere
-the more common to find area in the quarter berth area on the underside of the bench. nothing again there is some paint here, not the entire berth but the first foot or so, in either case I see nothing drilled here either on either side all the way up to the bulkhead that backs up to the aft storage
- of course its also not on the starboard transom because the boat is older than 1972
- under the hatch there is a support beam that sits vertically between the cabin and the quarter berth area this is little more than a piece of half inch plywood with decorative padding on the cabin or fore side of the board. on the aft side of this board there are drill holes that appear to be a 9 the entire mass of drill holes is about 6 by 4 inches but at best this could be a hull number is this a hull number? its a rather strange location basicly nect to the channel the keel winch cable goes
so I am a bit out of ideas at this point.... thoughts?

Re: Identify that boat
Maybe forget the search as you have a title and start asking questions about the rigging and anything else you need help with. I'm sure you will find help in that department here or on the other couple Mac sites,Redemption wrote:.....so I am a bit out of ideas at this point.... thoughts?
