Changing the color of my inflatable???

Post by Divecoz »

Hummmmmmmmm
There are a few ( 2 ) companies that offer products just for this project.. Very IMHO $$$$
So here I am, looking for ideas.. My Custom Car buddies have never done this.. Its PVC..US Boats.... It cost me all of $100 because its old (but very usable)and has the undesirable.... plywood floor.. We talked about adding 4 times the normal amount of DuPont Flex Agent to any cross polymer "paint" and just NEVER deflate it or roll it up!! IMHO Not Real Feasible.. SEM Marine Product? Works on all kinds of Marine Vinyl... :) I sent them an email and so far ? No response :( Why Am I Even thinking about this? I had my Reg #'s and Name Laser Cut and I applied to the boat and Inflatable.. you guessed it.. They're fine on the boat and lifting off on the inflatable. I would like to paint under the Reg#s and the Name White(?) the rub "rail" black and the rest Maroon to match my Bimini and Main Sail cover....
As long as I dont RUIN it!!!... worst case??? Its Butt Ugly... FOREVER as it peels off and no doubt, some of it never comes, totally off.. :x
What are your thoughts on this? I can "paint/coat" just the bottom and toss the dang thing in my pool to see what happens as far as sitting in water goes..
Any Ideas? Any BTDT warnings? :!: Krylon makes paint for PVC outside furniture? I have used it on furniture around the pool but, it all needs to be redone every year? Every other year? Hahahaha I dont ROLL any of that furniture up either :| ..

You might be able to dye or stain it a darker color, but I doubt it. Chemically the only other process that would possibly work is called "Dye Sublimation" but the melt point for PVC is way to low for that.

I think you're looking at a giant mess here. Howabout deflate it and hide it if it ain't pretty?

PVC you say :o
Damn wonder it is still serviceable!
My 6 year old PVC is now in a state of deterioration, a breakdown of the fabric to the point of being sticky and gooey on the surface. Rather than write it off and buy a new one (I am too cheap) I did some research and discovered this product that I got from Jamestown Dist. It is called MDR Inflatable Boat Top Coating, it is flexible, vinyl & waterbased, mine is light gray. I am not sure about adding your own color tinting, I will just go with the gray. It cost me about $30.00 for a quart and I hope that will cover the whole dinghy. I am just waiting for outdoor temps to stabilize in the above 15 dgree C range which is starting to look like the latter part of this week, then I will inflate the dinghy and try painting it. With any luck I will get a couple more years service out of my POS dinghy.

OK I am NOT going to leave this to the Pros : )
I talked with the Owner of my local ACE.. Its water based blablabla.. Lets try it..We'll TRY mixing it with the same tints he uses for all his other paint.. If It works GREAT.. if its doesnt? Should I go Light or Dark Grey?? :D :D Worst case the bottom looks like crap and I'm out about $40 for paint.. Wont be the first time ...
I'll send for that product tomorrow..

I would suggest that you try mixing gray with red, but you might end up with pink. :D

:D Easy to spot at a distance :o Rich I might end up with 1 qt. of yucky mauve cottage cheese or a qt. of indescribable slimy goop, what da heck its all of $40...I painted the entire front of my 3.5 story Vicky and 3 days later standing on the sidewalk , I had to agreed with the wife.. ( The real boss) Yeps.. its too dark ...tone it down 3 shades..so much for khaki is khaki :x Hahaha $100 in paint and 3 days standing on an extension ladder .. only to do it all over again.. what are ya gonna do ? She was right, it was just, too dark..

And Stephen makes fun of C-130 pilots (not me of course) wearing pantyhose...

So does this imply something about submariners...

See page 753. You got a couple of options there. I assume if we (I work at a West Marine) other companies must too. Happy hunting.
