Post by padge »

After a coming together with a walkway I need a replacement port upper shroud line :(

Can anyone recommend a supplier in the UK

Sorry to be a dummy, but couldn't you just have a rigger fabricate you another shroud. Surely they must do that in the UK.

I have the facilities and ability to fabricate one myself but not the parts

I am working away from home at the moment ,unable to source the bits myself so I am prepared to pay a premium for a ready made product.

For a temporary/emergency repair, get four wire rope clips, and a piece of the same diameter wire rope. Attach two of the clips above the break and two below.
When cruising it's a good idea to carry a piece of wire rope at least as long as your longest shroud, and four rope clips.

Bill that sounds like great advice! :D I'm going to do precisely that for my on-board repair kit. Thanks for that.

Why not get in touch with Macgregors directly? They do have an agent in the UK, though I'm not sure just how active or good they are, I think they are called Pacific Marine, but I don't have any other details to hand.

I guess that the easiest thing is to contact your local chandlers and ask them to make up a shroud to order, they should have all the bits, or they will know the number of a man that does. If you don't know the length, email the Macgregor factory, I believe they are usually quite helpful.

What part of the country are you based in?

Months ago, I took all my 98 :macx: shorouds lines from the mast (baby stays, backstay, complete forestay) to a local nautical store in Las Palmas (Canary Islads). They sold me a new brand set of lines for 140 euros. Tension adjusters plates were not included as originals were in good shape. I didn´t note lenghts of cables as they just "copy" the old ones. Now I keep the old set, just in case of trouble...
What I-m trying to say is that hardware needed to built a complete set of cables for Macgregor :macm: or :macx: can be found (and made), with easy.

I've heard nothing back from the UK agent :o

Seem like I'm going to have to order the bits and make up a couple of sets myself when I get a chance.

I can't get to my mac at the moment could someone tell me the size of wire needed thanks!

I got mine from Blue Water as well http://bwyachts.com/.

I'm in the UK but figured the reasonable postage was worth it to be sure of the right part and save the hassle of getting it made up. Delivered in about a week.

I got a new forestay (upgraded to 4mm) made up in 20mins for £30 from aladdins cave riggers at burseldon. I had proper fittings too rather than those poxy telurite loops. If you know what you want they are excellent value.
