MacGregor is at it again!

Post by roril »

While I was crewing a 45 Morgan Center Cockpit from Oxnard to San Francisco, Mike from MacGregor called and needed my boat for some more mesurements. (remember when they asked to use a 26D last year and I was the lucky one to respond) They came up to my place in the high desert, picked up the boat and just returned it yesterday. That's a 3.5 - 4 hour round trip.

Last time they buffed her out, added new stripping and the parts for the rotating mast I installed. This time they went over the whole boat and repaired all of the stress cracks. I had lots of them in the cockpit area. Then they added new gelcoat to that area.

What ever MacGregor is doing is beyond me. The 1988 MacGregore 26D that I own is the fastest boat they have produced, so they say. With the Rotating Mast I was able to start dead last in a race at Monterey and by out pointing the other boats was able to run down all (30 plus) but one of the bigger boats to take 2nd place. There was also a smaller Sage but he was well crewed. Now if I had a clew on how to race my boat, I might have planned my last turn better, remembered to raise the DB and released some ballast as we flew down wind wing on wing.

Thanks to Roger, MIke and Crew for taking such good care of "Andiamo". You can borrow her and time you want!

Hey Bob you can't beat that. The value of your boat just went up :) .

BTW they have built a lot faster boat....the 65-70's  . From previous posts here is what I'm thinking they are doing. We visited the plant a year or so ago and they are working on a new big/long boat that would be a lot more expensive than the old 65's, but would also be competitive with today's generation of mono-hull boats.

I believe that they are using computers to design the new hull and come up with potential performance figures for it. If they plug the hull shape/dimensions of a D into the computer and then compute what the performance should be they can check those numbers against your D to see if they trust the computers. If the numbers are close then they will probably feel good about the computer modeling for the new boat they are designing. I think that the D is probably closest to the hull shape of the big boat since it wouldn't have the long centerboard trunk that the S has.

That is my guess and I don't think it has anything to do with another 26 at the moment, but if the computer modeling proves to be accurate they could use it to design another 26. I want to emphasize that this is purely speculation on my part and I'm not privy to anymore than what Mike told Ruth and I when he gave us the tour and that was they were working on another 60+ foot, very expensive this time, boat,

Like I said, "If I had" but, I didn't raise the DB or drop the ballast. Nope, I went after him fully loaded and draggin the board. Fact is I never have run with out ballast for fear it will turtle but I have forgotten to lower the board once or twice. Boat don't turn worth a darn with no DB in the water. LOL!

Sum - Right .... Mike gave Joni and I the same info when we visited the factory. Right now the M is the best selling boat they have and they make one a day as it is. I love my D and only wish I had the head room of the M. Joni is making me a new PT Cover next year along with some new cushions.

I like your computer thinking...

Or mine and add what the M has with slideing gally. I like the flater bottom of the X in my shallow waters, also the centerboard.
All I want is larger center berth so I can lay down on without going aft berth.(6ft. tall)
Add 3 inches to headroom.
Interior of the X is for a 5'8" person.( I think thats Rodgers height)
If they do this in a new S, I would love it with a 10 hp outboard, tiller steering and 8.5 ft. beam.

I'm kinda surprised they haven't yet met in the middle. They have a dedicated and very large market with the SDX&M models, why not give everyone something to upgrade too without having to have a crew to sail it. Something in the 35-40 ft range. I know there's tons of other options out there, but again they already have the client base :P Food for thought Roger
