Here's a sneak peak at roger's new 70 foot yacht.

Post by sljury »

I came across this video on y/t and thought all mac owners would like to see this.
Did no know where to post this, and not sure if it has been posted all-ready,
but I am certain its very interesting look
It takes a look at Rogers new boat under construction and looks fast.
With a water ballast pump for transfer of water from port to starboard.

This video left you with a cliff hanger; just as he says what they are going to do with the old M molds it ends…

Roger was a businessman, so I would have assumed he owned that property , considering how long he produced boats there. I wonder what happened to the Hull & Deck of the 65 that sat on the roof of the main building?

They are renting out the bays where the M was built. The factory is still making the big boat but all those people for the little boat are gone and that part of the plant is up for rent. (I think they already have renters).

I was at the plant a couple of months ago, and they said they were just finishing up the last of the boats they had orders for. The guy in the video is the one who helped me so much when I was there. He really went out of his way to save my vacation. I guess Roger's daughters are going to produce a modified version of the 26M. I was amazed at the number of businesses that were shutting their doors in California. That state has killed itself, and just doesn't have the brains to figure it out.

It'd be nice to have the carbon fibre mast as an option on the :macm: or :macx: . I wonder what that would do to the 'tenderness'.
Probably too pricey though.... sigh. :(

I knew that. I should have been more specific. I meant the new big boat the Roger is going to concentrate on. The one in the video.

It would cost more than your boat for a one-off.

I saw those submarine windows when i was at the plant - really cool but Mike said those are on Rogers boat only. The production boat has all the windows above the gunnel and none in the hull.

The big boats will always be built there. The only way to make carbon fiber and epoxy make financial sense is to go big, but once Roger gets the scince down real good I think the intention is to make advances in technology far enough to start building small boats out of epoxy. The main reason for going epoxy is that ther are NO EPA RULES! You can make as many boats as you want in California out of Epoxy because Epoxy does not have toxic VOC. When I was at the plant you could smell the glass resin everywhere - it permeated my cloths and I could still smell it when I got home. 'boat' is one of the last ten boats and as soon as I got it home I put it out in the sun and opened all the hatches to let the thing "dry out". The smell was really strong. I have done that pretty regular and the smell is almost gone now.

When I visited the big building where the 70 foot boat was being built (it was not shiny and smooth then) the big room was clean and free of odor. The epoxy stuff is pretty cool. The problem with it is that it requires a TON of santing to make it smooth. It's just as bad as wood. Lot's of sanding.

Fiberglass is the past, it's going to be a dinasor. As soon as they get the technology figured out no one is going to use fiberglass anymore. It's a dying industry just like making sailboats out of wood became a dying industry after fiberglass was perfected. Roger is (as usuall) just ahead of the curve.

Extreme overkill for our boats. Wouldn't notice much of a performance difference and would add $thousands to the cost.

I think glass is gonna be here for some time still. The cost of epoxy and the technology isn't ready for our market.
With the 70, Roger may be ahead of the curve, or at least following the lead of the curve. This technology has been around for a while, he's not blazing a trail. It will be a very fast racer. Not quite "Oracle" grade Americas Cup, but fast in monohull offshore category. Skinny, long, tall and extremely fast. It will be pricey also, unlike our boats which are so famous for their affordability.

In other places, Roger is far from ahead of any curve. Maybe at the end of it. Ever see the Mac website? http://www.macgregor26.com (Written in Frontpage 1998). Compare it to say http://www.HunterMarine.com or http://www.Beneteausa.com

Your comments about fiberglass is just what my dad said the old timers were saying when fiberglass first came out. They said "wood will still be around for a long time!" They were wrong. Hardly zero production boats in wood now. Same thing is going to happen to fiberglass. You think it's okay to pollute in Florida more than other places?? (Is that why BP is there??) I don't think so - fiberglass will get chased out of Florida just like everywhere else sooner or later. In California they have the AQMD and big smog problems because all of So Cal is a valley. The stuff gets trapped. It's just the geography. Sooner or later it will catch up with anyone working in glass resin.

As for fancy web sites and brochures: Yup, when you buy a bennetue 5% of what your spending is for marketing - I don't doubt that one bit. If snazzy marketing is what makes you feel good, then spend your money whatever way you want. When was the last time you saw an "Oracle grade Americas cup" with two bathrooms, full gally, and bedrooms for 8 people? I don't think your getting the magnatude of a luxury boat like that being almost as fast as Oracle and costing less money - all the snazzy websites in the world can't beat that.
