We're still awaiting word on a delivery date for our , but have been busy making our equipment wishlist.
Although my previous experience with spinnakers has been limited to the masthead-rig-with-pole variety, the simplicity of the Mac's asymmetrical cruising chute is appealing -- since this boat will not be raced. Still, a radial-head design would seem to offer higher performance (and be better looking) than the standard Mac offering. Would someone who owns the Mac cruising spinnaker please post its dimensions (luff, leach & foot) so that we can amuse ourselves with some comparison shopping while we wait?
I'd be surprised if you find anyone who has one for a 26M . . . ???
But you can look it up on Hermann Wadler's pages, look for Sails by Boat. That much said ... the factory has only recently released their assym ... maybe it has changed from the prior Mac26? You might need to ping your dealer. Congrats on the new boat, but I suspect that you're still blazing trails.
I have two sets of specs for the MacGregor Cruising Spinnaker, for the 26X and 26M, are: Luff - 27' (or 23'), Leech - 24' 6' (or 20' 6"), Foot - 17' 6" (or 15'). I think the ones in parentheses are correct.
I sell the one sold by MacGregor, with a list price of $475, for $400, including sheets, and shipping.
FWIW, the dimensions in parens (23, 20-6, 15) are the same posted on Wadler's website. His page says that all dimensions were provided by Macgregor Yachts.
Frank,
Thanks for the link to Wadler's website. The 23x20.5x15 dimensions seem like they are the correct ones.
BTW - the luff dimension of 28'2" that is listed there for the mainsail MUST be incorrect (either bad info from MacGregor or an entry typo). The 26M mast is described as being 2 taller, but the 28'2" luff dimension exceeds that of the 26X by 3'5"... it even exceeds the listed 27'5" leech dimension for the 26M, which is pretty unlikely. I suspect that the actual luff dimension of the 26M main is closer to 26'5".
Bill,
Thanks for the quote. If we decide to go with the standard cruising spinnaker that's a good price.
Hi All.Still frozen in the great white north, but patiently waiting for spring. Buddy has a spinnaker off a 26ft thunderbird that we're going to fly on my X this summer. What other equipment do we need. I assume I attatch a block to thebow to hook the foot to, but does it go where the furler attatches or ??? also do we just use the jib halyard to hoist it. ???? Any help is appreciated.fair winds......Jim in Canada.

Doug,
I posted the identical comment not too long ago. I don't understand how that luff dim would possibly be correct. Maybe Bill has the definitive answer .... Bill???
I measured my cruising spinnaker with these results:
foot: 17'6"
leech: 24'6"
luff: 27'
These are the non-parenthetical dimesions in Bill's response.
I'm sure you could call Doyle and get the dimensions from them too. Jack O'brien on another posting said the ATN spinnaker sleeve dimension given to him by Doyle was 24'6" which is consistant with my leech. It seems like you would want the sleeve a little longer but the ATN literature does say to use the "leech stay length" for an assymetrical sail.
We built a performance asymetrical for a gentleman in Spain at the begining of the year for his 26X. Here is what he had to say.
Hi Chip.
Spinnaker works very good. I'll be waiting somebody take any photo out of
the boat, but I'll take some photos this weekend and I'll send you. Last
sunday, with 6 kn of wind, the gps shows 5,2 kn (90). Best courses are
between 90 and 120.
