Alexandria Bay NY - Pirate week 2016

Post by Starscream »

I just spent the weekend in the 1000 islands region between Brockville and Gananoque, and spent Saturday night in Alexandria Bay, NY. http://www.visitalexbay.org/It was a beautiful trip, and we lucked out each day with the wind blowing in exactly the right direction for where we wanted to go. We cruised probably about 40 miles over the three days, and I used about $8 in gas. Most of that was spent in blowing past a "real" sailboat that had passed us under sail then stalled out in a no-wind zone between islands. Had to show off a bit, what Macs can do when the wind stops.

The region is really great for our boats. Mostly protected sailing, some beach, lots of marinas, anchorages, restaurants. Alex Bay is a nice little touristy town, that does a good job keeping things interesting. During weekdays, the bay at Grenadier Island center is perfect for swimming, hiking, and staying overnight inexpensively. Boldt Castle and Singer Castle provide excellent destinations for both adults and kids.

We are wrapping up the boat for the winter this week, but plan to return several times next year. During last year's poker-run (not so pleasant an event, but worth seeing once http://www.pokerrunsamerica.com/compone ... -poker-run) we were near Alex bay during their Pirate Week, and heard the cannon-fire from the mock battle in the harbor. They have a few hotels that also have docks, so you can have a hot shower and swim in a pool too. https://riveredge.com/ and http://www.boardwalk1000islands.com/accommodations.html

A short video of us under sail, crossing the border into Canada heading directly towards Rockport, Ontario. Don't get too excited about the speeds we call out: I have the GPS in km/hr in deference to the wife and kids who don't really care about nautical miles. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/399 ... Got us to thinking: we'll head back next year for Pirate Week and maybe I can generate some interest for a Mac-Attack Pirate invasion next year? Usually around the first week of August. Anyone in?

Dropbox just banned my public links for excessive download traffic. I'll transfer the videos over to youtube soon.

I really liked Alexandria Bay. Lots to do an see. We'll be back often and would be cool to see some other macs there too someday.

Think it starts August 12 next year.

There are seriously a ton of interesting things to do in the area, with or without kids. Weekends can be pretty busy, especially at the castles. There are marinas everywhere, and restaurants, on both sides of the border, plus nice places to swim and hike. I haven't snuck into the Lake of the Isles yet to have a look, but it it's on our adventure list for next year. Plus we want to get down to the beach at Leek Island, a place we haven't been yet but has been recommended to us.
