I'm currently shopping for a tiller-mount autopilot. I'm looking at either the Raymarine ST1000, or the Simrad TP-10. I've read both good and terrible feedback comments on each unit, but I was wondering if anyone here has any real-world experience with either unit.

st1000
Have a raymarine st1000 on my 21ft sirius swing keel, it will handle differently i think as it has a wider keel and wider rudder, also little freeboard and ballast is the steel keel. However LOVED LOVED LOVED the ST1000. Adjustable gain controll for different sea conditions, also in standby would hold tiller in position and adjust 1 or 10 deg. at touch of button, in auto woul hold course well. Linked to gps would steer a course or to waypoint as per selection on gps.
Spent 600 canadian on it 3 years ago. Best money i ever spent on a boat.
In some rougher conditions would set course and stand in cabin at companion way, close enough to jump back to the tiller but out of the weather. also calmer standing low in the center.
Now on my 99x have installed a raymarine sportpilot plus, yet to see action at sea
hope this helps

Last Saturday I tried out the autopilot that came with the boat(Ray STS2000+), and I was very impressed with the way that it operated and and held course in the Potomac with all of the wakes pushing us off course.
The unit that I was installed with the factory bracket on both the hull and the tiller so it fits tight and there is very little play. Also keep in mind that I had only used the auto pilot once and I haven't used any other units to compare to.
According to the previous owner, he had chosen the STS2000 over the 1000 because it had a faster response and wanted to keep it overbuilt for the boat to minimize failure.
Hope this helps.
