tiling on galley top

Post by mike uk »

I'm just about to fit a cooker into the galley top on my 2003X.

There's some existing tiling which I assume is factory fitted. There are 16 tiles in all running along the left side, across the back and turning the corner just behind the sink on the right hand side. There is an untiled space in the middle with the moulded sink to the right.

The previous owner did some re-grouting but this is breaking up anyway.

As I started to remove the grouting from the outer edge it seems there is a very slight recess in the fibreglass top as though it is designed to allow the tiles to sit in it slightly.

My preference would be to remove all of the tiles and fit the cooker slightly to the left of centre. However, if there's a recess under the tiles then I will leave the tiles alone and fit the cooker in the existing flat space which pushes it more to the middle/right.

Does anyone know if there is a recess under the tiles or am I imagining it?

You are not imagining it. The tiles are set with some sort of adhesive (probably 3M 5200) into a recess in the counter top. I removed some of the tiles to make way for a stainless steel sink. It was a job chipping out the old tiles, preparing the surface and then filling the recess to make it level with the rest of the counter top. Some folks have installing a new counter top over the existing, then installed fixtures into the new top. A stainless steel bar sink, from Home Depot, will allow you to actually wash dishes and to place hot pots and pans in it out worrying. Good luck.

Hello:
The tiles on my 95 were set with RTV. They come up easy and had no grout. It wouldn't stay in place anyway with all the fiberglass flexing.

tiling on the galley top

Hey, what a project. While you're at it, consider adding a folding leaf galley top extension on the forward side of the galley. It folds totally out-of-the-way. We also have a new version of the galley face redo. We tossed the OEM, and installed sliding doors. Inside, we designed some new concepts for interior floor of the galley. See the Mac Mods Section.
