96 X vs. 02 X - Diffferences?
If I currently own a 2002 26x, would I notice the differences on a 96 if I had to buy it for the summer?
I know the rudders, steering, and ballast are different (in addition it being moved forward in the 02) better sailing?
That's it?
When did the balsa come out of the deck?

As you say, the rudders and rudder brackets especially are very different. The older X has a built-in step at the inside base of the companionway rather than a metal ladder. As far as the balsa core deck, the attached photo is the best information I know of.

Wasn't there a ballast vent under the step? Also I don't think the very early 26x had the drain/indicator hole under the step/ladder.

Neither does a very late 2002 X. Lol. I suspect that the Mac factory was 5 sigmas away from 6 sigma.

I remember a fellow boater at my marina had a late model X. He was 6 2' with big feet. Apparently the late model X's have less "foot space" in the cockpit?

Another difference, not easily noticed, is the liner design in the extreme bow area. If you crawl forward and look up to the tip of the bow, you'll find an open space in front of the anchor locker liner, which goes all the way up to the underside of the foredeck. Earlier models are designed differently.

My '96 has balsa in the deck and I assume all areas that have nonskid. I know the deck in front of the transom does. The vent is under the step with the main fill valve, there is a drain on the transom like the newer ones.
