mac 19 tow vehicle..

Post by seamonkey70 »

Hi,

What are people hauling their mac 19s with..? In the promo video I see them using small (older) sedans..

I just bought a 19 with a 25hp 4stroke, and have been planning on upsizing from our rav 4 (2011, 4cyl, 4WD) to haul it.. but with current fuel prices, I'm really liking our relatively efficient well-rounded Rav 4..

the hauling capacity seems to be 2050 pounds (I forget the tongue weight), so the boat/trailer/motor should be under this.. and the boat will spend most of the time in a slip..I have it stored, and been working on it at a friend's place over the past few weeks, and it seems soo light..

Seems against my better judgement, but I thought I'd ask, in case anybody has some experience with this..

Don’t have a 19, but looking at sailboatdata, looks like they weigh 2050 lbs with 800 lbs of water ballast. Not sure if that’s the 2050 you are referencing, sounded like you are talking about the Rav4’s tow capacity, but I’m seeing 1500 lbs for that.

Anyways if the 19 is 1250 lbs in towing trim, and say the trailer is 400 lbs, the rav4 can most likely do it, if you approach it with an appropriate amount of caution. I used to tow a motorcycle on a utility trailer with an older Subaru WRX, which has a similar curb weight as your rav4 (more power, but power usually isn’t the problem). Once when moving I loaded that same trailer up with everything I could fit on it, I didn’t weigh it but the trailer tires looked concerningly low at the usual 40 psi I ran them at, had to pump them up to the max sidewall pressure. I would guess I was near if not over the 2000lbs GVWR for the little trailer, and it was noticeable from behind the wheel. But I drove carefully and made it 80 highway miles without any problem.

Long hauls, steep grades, or wanting to bring along 3 passengers + luggage are probably bad ideas. But otherwise, if your car and trailer are in good condition, it should be able to do it. Your stopping distance will be terrifyingly long until you recalibrate (assuming no trailer brakes).

We tow ours with a Ford F250 with a 8'9" camper on top, no problems. Also love when washing and/or waxing only 19 ft that extra 7 feet you guys can have it. LOL

You should be ok.

Plan B, since you have it in a slip, you arguably just two it twice a year. Why not borrow/rent? 8)
