Help Identify Honda Year

Post by ScottGetter »

I apologize or all of my questions. Hopefully I will be able to contribute as I gain some knowledge.

I am trying to identify the year of my Honda motor as well as get my hands on the PDF version of the owners manual.

What I know so far:

I have a Honda BF50A LRTA.

I have the Frame ID number - BAZL-10112123

Oil Filter - Sierra 18-7911-1

The boat is a 98 MacGregor 26X and it must be an early 98 because the helm is shorter than the late model that has the rack and pinion steering.

I can't find a serial number other than the one on the mount. I want to get the maintenance up to a known date and it became necessary to verify the year of the motor.

As you can see from the photo, the oil needs to be changed. I was going to do the following:
  • Oil and Filter Change
    Fuel Filter Change
    Gear Lube Change
    Thermostat Replacement
    Impeller Replacement
    Spark Plugs
Anything else I should do?

The engine is pre-1997. All BF50A before 1997 use the same parts.

Your X year can be decoded from the hull identification number (on the right rear corner).
It is in the form mmmhssssddyy.
mmm should be MAC
h should be X
ssss is the serial number (digits 0-9)
dd is a code that indicates the manufacture month and year
yy is the last two digits of the model year.

The manufacture year is not necessarily the model year.

The first "d" will be A-L where A is January and L is December.
The second will be the last digit of the manufacture year.
