Saltspring Island, Ca.

Post by secross2 »

Beautiful!! 8) This was our first trip up to the Gulph Islands and it was great. The San Jauns, as beautiful as ever. I recommend anybody heading north stop in Ganges on the Saltsprings Island. Learned a valueble lesson this trip. Power boaters seem to get worse every year LOL. This particular person cut us off in Anacotes and our spreader hit a piling bending it. As I was fixing it, it just snapped.Unfortunetly we couln't get any sailing in this trip due to the spreader being damaged Also my ballest handle broke. I drilled a hole in the slider and put a fairly long galvanized screw in it and it works as good as new Rosario Straight had 1 to 3 foot waves and it was fun but a little chaosy . Oh there is a beautiful boat out there called the black pearl it's an M. a must see for Mac owners everywhere. I also saw an X with a Honda 90hp. Anybody know how that works? The trip was great but we only had 5 days. Next year shooting for 9 days.

Hello:
I'm with you, went to Ganges last year on our cruise. I love it up there. Planning on an early July trip in 06. I like going early summer because there are fronts coming through with good wind. We had spectacular sailing 6 days out of 9. We sailing from Friday Harbor to Bedwell (Poets Cove) on a single tack in just under 3 hours. Kept up with a Freedom 30 on our second sail. Sailed along with Orca, had Dahls porpoises playing in our bow wave..................aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, it was glorious.
Have to get passports next time. I'm sure getting back in to the US will be more difficult.

Welcome to the Board secross2! Great to hear about the trip and bummer to hear about the spreader, mine broke as well when I tried to "gently" straighten it out.

We are all looking forward to hearing more sailing stories and don't forget about the photos, we love to see them!

That's her and she is nice looking. Any body have any info on having a 90hp on an X. I don't think it would be worth the change if any mods needed to be made. Would it even make that big of a difference in getting from point a to point b giving me more time to sail? :macx:

The extra prep to mount a larger outboard isn't really all that complex, but your next question of "effective speed to destination" is surely valid too. Due to varying conditions, the answer differs for inland lakes versus cruising on coastal waters. There's also a features/benefits analysis to choose 2-stroke or 4-stroke.

Even though a 2-stroke 90 is the same weight as a 4-stoke 70 ... I doubt that the 90 horse will get you to a "coastal destination" any faster than a Suzuki 70 (or maybe even a Honda 50). The reason is that coastal conditions can frequently prevent using all of that extra performance.

Still, there is another reason to choose a larger outboard. These bigger motors swing larger propellers, so they achieve medium-fast cruising speeds at lower RPMs, somewhat quicker arrivals "at a conversational cruise." Even though not using full throttle potentials, this is less stressful than pushing hard to get there with a 50-horse motor. The "conversational cruise" potential is what motivated my choice of the oversized Suzuki-60.

I've never "heard" a 2-stroke 90, but I'd surely want an on-the-water test before I'd abandon the mid-sized 4-stroke, even at identical weights. The modern 2-strokes are certainly lighter and faster than 4-strokes. But even taking marketing hyperbole at face-value, I suspect the 2-stroke noise levels and fuel consumption are still only "almost as good as" the 4-strokes. I can guarantee that most guests on my boat don't even know when the motor is idling, and are amazed to converse during a 3500 rpm cruise. It won't pull a skier like a 90-horse, but the 4-stroke 60 is perfect for coastal cruising my 26X (and I've yet to have a guest ask to ski on SF Bay)!

( ... ducking swiftly to avoid the heat & oil smoke of 2-stroke exhaust flames ... ) :D

Thanks for the info and I'll do a bit of research myself, however, you did answer my main question. I will be looking into the 90hp. I do all coastal cruising and once we get to our final destination we put the sails up. Unfortunately it takes about 12 hours to reach our favorite place in the San Jauns. Other wise it takes only about 30mins to sail around the sound.
Thanks again.
