Fun Game: This must be a popular bridge....

Post by Zavala »

So I was surfing tonight, looking at interesting boats, when I came across this page in a brochure for a Balboa 26 -- look closely at the bridge in the top photo....

I thought, hey that bridge looks familiar....

But... the ivy's getting longer.

So, 1st prize goes to whoever can identify the the bridge? And, anyone who finds another picture of it gets their name thrown in a hat for 2nd prize. My own guess is somewhere in So. Cal. -- since the Balboa plant was also in Costa Mesa -- according to the brochure. But to win, we'll need a satellite photo or coordinates.

NOTE: Prizes limited to Hallmark e-cards and virtual kudos. No warranties expressed or implied. :(

I don't know where it is, but I do notice that the Balboa had to take it a low tide! Nah, nah! :P :D

Might be. But zooming in (w/Google Earth) on the various bridges in the area, none seem quite right. Here's a mapof the Newport Beach area as a reference. Which bridge are you thinking of?

Side note: for those of you who haven't used Google Earth, I highly recommend it. It's awesome. The best satellite image tool I've used by far. And, quite addictive.

I'm a lurker, but couldn't help responding to this one.

Could be...

3336'57.98"N
11755'32.32"W

Mountains in first photo background fit, as does "shrubbery" on either road side. Incidentally, check out the lamp post on the right side on the road between the different photos.

The only thing that doesn't fit is the amount of masts in first photo. Could there have been a dock which has since been removed? Everything else seems to fit: angles formed by bridge, number and location of "decorations" on bridge, houses in background, and location re: factory.

My best guess is the Lido Isle Bridge in Newport Harbor. Charts show it at vertical clearance of 14' and horizontal clearance of 50'.

FYI; Well its official. The bridge is the Lido Isle Bridge I called Bill to find out. He said that it was the Lido Island Bridge.
While I was checking out the Google Earth satellite images (mentioned above) for the bride area I decide to check out the MacGregor plant. I noticed that it looked like a big boat was sitting on the roof. So I want to my sales brochure. Thats a Mac 65 sitting up there! Its funny because I dont know how many times I have looked at that brochure and my videos (X-M) and I never noticed it. So I asked Bill about that. He said that it was the plug for the 65. They didnt want to throw it away but needed a place to store it. When they remodeled the offices the new layout included putting the boat on the roof and the curved roof in front of the boat depicts a wave.

I noticed that the Google Earth satellite images are from spring 2002. I can see my red truck sitting in the driveway and no boat. The leaves are just starting to come out. I purchased my boat during the summer of 2002. I also checked out the World Trade Center ground zero area. You can see they have just finished the clean-up. They completed the main clean-up in May 2002.

I was listening to talk radio the other day, it was mentioned by the host that he thought Google Earth should be shut down. His reasoning, if you want to call it that, was that it would make it too easy for terrorists to target locations. Go figure...

Of course, because without Google Earth terrorists would not be able to find anything to target. Oil company road maps and those big Rand McNally atlases we get from WalMart should be banned as well. While we're at it, we can remove all the street signs.

Terrorists are so dumb, they'll probably just run around in circles trying to figure out what to hit next. And without these things to give them targets, they'll be forced to go after their alternate targets and real enemies: talk show hosts.
