Good Books on 12-volts

Post by Divecoz »

I recently bought , Sailboat Electrics Simplified by Don Casey
Some or much of what you will find you may well know but it helps to refresh or remind you of a lot of facts / known values . A few tricks are given as well for when you need something to work but don't have all the parts to repair it properly. Includes a ton of drawing's .
I also bought John S. Burnett's book . . .Dangerous Waters / Modern Piracy and Terror on the High Seas
I had received a couple of gift certificates at Christmas for book stores and found lots of stuff to buy some for fun some for knowledge .

While you're at it get Don Casey's "100 fast & easy boat improvements"

I'm going to try his acrylic bin suggestions.

He demonstrates how to bend acrylic. Now I have to find an acrylic supplier.

Don Casey is a practical guy, and his writings are a bit easier to follow than Nigel Calder's. I really enjoy reading them.

BoatUS's Don Casey library is here and Sailnet's is here. Note that there are many more articles on the Sailnet site if you click the "Show all articles" text.

It depends upon the size and number of batteries being charged through the combiner and their state of charge and acceptance rate. For flooded cell batteries, that's said to be at most 25%, or 50 amps for two 100 amp-hour batteries in parallel. Of course, there would have to be a 50 amp charger on the other side of the combiner to supply it for those batteries to draw that.

50 amp is more than enough for the 20A your BigFoot can put out. And even if you add a 50 amp charger, if there's only one 100 AH house battery on the other side, about the most it will draw through the combiner is 25A.

That is what I had found also . No need for me to spend money to over compensate a limited charging capability.

I read this book a few months ago and it was a real eye opener. Surprising what has happened on the high sea's since WWII and you never hear much about it.

Another good read is "Looking for a ship" by John A. McPhee.
Author covers the US Merchant Marine decline by tagging along with a MM as he gets a job and works on a cargo ship.

Acrylic is Plexiglas. Available at Lowe's, Home Depot et al as well as any plastic distributor.
