Saw beat up ol' Mac... MACP0674B393 serial number

Post by Steve »

Anyone know what kind of Mac this is, looks a LOT like a 26X but a little smaller.

I saw it in the back of a rented duplex here in Nashville. Under a tree with leaves and junk all over it. Looks like something has pryed the hatch open (squirrels?) and may be running in and out of it.

Just curious if the hull is solid, and I wanted to take on a project, what I could offer the owner? Would a $1000 cash be a joke (too little)? Also, if I were to get it fixed up, what might I be able to sell it for?

Oh yea, it does have a little Tohatsu (sp?) 9hp (I think) motor on it. Pretty nasty looking, not sure if it works.

Thanks,

Steve

P.S. If someone wants to help me out on this I could take some digital pictures and post them.

It's a 1993 Mac 19. This is the first "Powersailor" that Macgregor built. More info here. Click Here

So $1000 would be too much. What should I offer? I don't know if someone (especially if they bought it new back in '93) would go for the "I'll haul it away for free" option?

Its all in the presentation.

If you say "I haul it away for free, wax it and sell it for $2000, the answer will be no.

If you have a kid on your block who wants to try sailing on the lake, and you'll help him get started, only a cold fish wouldnt hand it over...

Seriously Steve, I helped a guy pull an old Rhodes 19 out of my neighbors yard - it was a real planter, and when she asked what it was worth, I said this guy deserves to take it for free for taking it on..

Let me see if I can write the ebay ad for you for that engine...

For Sale - Vintage ToHADSOO 9 hp (?) outboard - will look like new after some elbow grease and wax. I dont know much about these motors and am selling it for a friend, but it looks like it will turn over fine. A new one is $4000. Save and bid now!!

Never hurts to ask

It may be sitting there because he doesn't want to pay to have it disposed of . Around here its a couple hundred dollars to drop em off at the land fill as no one wants old fiberglass boats . . .
Ring the bell dont tell him your wanting to buy just say it peaked your interst . . you may find your the proud new owner of nothing/ I mean another hole in the water :D They look like neat little boats though.

Well, I left a card with the tenant that lives there. She said she would pass it on to the owner that owns the Mac. We'll see what happens.

So by no means should I pay a dime, just offer to haul it away?

Thanks again...

Good point, never thought about cking the trailer condition. I will def. ck. to see if it's beyond repair, if so I'll pass. If not, I'll fix it up and maybe give it to a relative...or sell it. I def. don't need two sailboats to upkeep, one's enough! :P

Steve, it definitely sounds like a :mac19:. I've had people mistake ours for an :macx: before -- until I got close to them.

If (and that's a Big IF) the hull is sound and the mast is okay, the boat should still be worth something. I'd look it over and then ask the owner what he wants for it myself. You might be surprised at how low the price is.

The :mac19:'a a pretty simple boat really, so it might not be as bad of project to bring back as you think. The "Clorox Bottle" interior should be easy to clean up, and there's really no steering linkage that would wear out -- short of losing the tiller. The biggest issue I could see is missing or damaged parts that aren't easily replaced -- i.e. the mast, hatchcover, ruders and centerboard.

The other thing to consider is powering it. You could probaly find an early 2000's 50hp two-stroke for $1500 to 2000 -- but it seems to me it's silly to put anything more valuable onto a project of that sorts....

Post some pics and I'll size it up against my own derelict yacht. :)

One more thing... Before you decide the mast is missing, take a look inside. Rememberm the :mac19: mast breaks into two parts for internal storage.

It might just be a diamond in the rough!
