Ensenada trip

Post by Timmy Z »

It was suggested this last weekend that we put together a trip to Ensenada this year. Two years ago we went and it was great. Let me know if you are interested and we can get started on a plan.

Sounds interesting. How's the "uphill" against wind/wave back to the US (San Diego?). Anyone do some diving on the last trip or would be up for it on this one? There's some great spots north of Ensenada.

my understanding is that it's a 5 day trip beginning in Mission Bay.

one to Coronado's, one to Ensenada, layover day in Ensenada, back to Coronado's, final leg to Mission Bay.
either Thursday morning to Monday evening or Friday morning to Tuesday evening.
that means 3 work days will be missed.

during the arrival leg we are required to stop at the Custom's Office. that can take up to a couple of hours. then head back out to Mission Bay.

we could eliminate that extra leg by departing from Shelter Island.

currently i can do Friday-8/11 to Tuesday-8/15, however, i'd rather do September after school starts.

Ensenada Trip

Post by Francis »

Hi Tim, how are things going.
I can't make this years trip, but I was thinking of doing it around mid July next year. My son gets out of the Navy in SD then so I was thinking of going to pick him up and take a little trip to Ensenada with him. Vickie is ready to go now if we could.
Keep it in mind for next year too if you can

Hey Tim, I was talking by message tag with Dave Clark the other day and
he mentioned doing a sailing trip. Give him a call to see if he is interested in your trip. He said he is busy with traveling for his work.

Trip

Post by Timmy Z »

Ill look at my schedule for 8/11. It looks good at first glance, but I have to check with my Planner/Scheduler the wife. There have been some changes as far as passports and the such. Ill look into it and post the info as I get it. So lets pencil in August 11th. and we can go from there.

Bob, I talked to Dave last week and mentioned the trip. He said he would check the site and let us know.

Here is what I found. You can read it yourself to get it first hand. Herm Beeck goes to Mexico every year so he may be able to fill in any blanks.

What it takes to get in.

The 11th. of August looks good to me. If we start in Mission Bay, its a straight shot to the North island.

I would like to stay in Ensenada for a few days. My wife likes to shop and one day isn't enough for her.

So...
we depart Mission bay on Friday-8/11 at "zero dark 30" or shortly thereafter, correct???
day one is to North Island.
day two, three, and four (Monday-8/14) in Ensenada.
day four late afternoon arrive at North Island?
or is it day five to North Island?
then, day six (Wednesday-8/16) to Mission bay with a stop off at Shelter island?

it might help all of us if we agree on what the timeline looks like.

Bob,

I reread your post on leaving shelter Island and it makes more sense to leave from there. I can leave whenever and stay as long or short as everyone wants, so whatever is decided is good with me. Lets nail down dates. I like your timeline so if everyone agrees lets lock it down.

Just curious how much of the time you spend motoring versus sailing on this trip.. sounds fun regardless.

If you check the charts you will see that the longest leg is from the North Coronado Island to Ensenada. Last time we sailed half way to the island from Mission Bay. We motored in the evening to get there. The next morning we motored around the island to check it out and around the center one to look at some whales. We sailed 80% of the way to Ensenada. I stopped sailing when we encountered a pod of whales, must have been 50 if there was one. The most I ever saw at one time. I dropped my sails so we could maneuver better. It was getting late so I motored into Ensenada from there.

Timmy, that sound like a great trip. The wife and I would like to spend a month or 2 in that area. It is interesting what you said about motoring in amongst the wales. In Canada we are told that if you are sailing in amongst the wales it is ok. But if you are motoring and you find yourself amongst the wales you must put your motor in neutral till they pass, unless you are to close to shore or it is dangerous. You are not allowed to chase or divert your course to intercept a pod of wales. This is law and you can be fined I understand. Just something for anyone coming to Canada to know.
We love the wales and look forward to going Sea of Cortez and such areas in the future after we retire. Maybe we will get a chance to meet some of you down there.

So this is the schedule as I see it.

We depart Shelter Island on Friday (8/11)
First day sailing to the North Island and anchor there overnight.
Second day (8/12), sailing to Ensenada and staying at Cruiseport Marina.
Leave Ensenada day five (8/15) and arrive at the north island that evening.
Sixth day arrive back at Shelter Island and check in at the Customs dock.

If we decide to come back earlier we can.

Free anchoring at the Shelter Island Yacht Basin. We should meet there Thursday afternoon or Friday morning early to get all our ducks in a row. I posted links to the marina and insurance so you can make all your arrangements. We can request that we get slips together. Just tell them you are part of the Mac Group and they will try to accommodate us. Before I make my reservations at the marina, I would like to get an estimate of the number of boats going. This way I could give them the estimate to help them get us together.

How does this sound?
