Dual axle trailer Question

I have a PM out to Chip, but what do some of you think about the need to move the original axle forward. Yes by all means I see the need but how on earth do I calculate how far??

Chip has posted that number in the past. I'm guessing/recalling about 8 inches.
You're limited by the bend in the frame rails ... so move forward to that bend!



Haven't yet moved my axle. But then, I'm not using two of 'em either!
My best-case scenario would move my single axle aft by six inches.

Thanks Frank and your so very close it hurts (9") but he did not mention the limit being the angle of the frame and I just looked i.e. with a flashlight and your correct . Thanks !

There should be trailer factions to offset the blue/white factions: The singles v the duals!

I don't know if my axle is in the original position, but I do know that I can (just) lift the front off the ground, so I guess it to be about 180lbs (there, no kgs!), and it behaves itself at highway speeds. Also have very good tyres.

Lease there seem to be two schools of thought out there about the dual axle trailer. One is : Its pulls and hauls a whole lot better than a single, with a considerable margin for saftey and comfort.
A those who want all that as well as being able to pull a Mac. with short wheel based SUV's and Vans and what have you. I am in that 2nd group.

Single axle trailers are faster. :P ...
Also cheaper and more maneuverable, with ample capacities (braking, tires & springs) when properly equipped.

Donning flame suit. :wink:

If you have to shoehorn your trailer into your parking spot with lots of turning at tight angles, it's a lot easier with single axle. With two you are dragging one set of wheels and tires sideways when you turn. That tortures the tire sidewalls.

I used Chips specs and yes, the fore mount for the front axle is just behind the bend on mine.
