Ahhh Victoria BC and surrounds....

Post by waternwaves »

Some wonderful victoria BC trip highlights.

1) Time in the boat after too many weeks of all work and no play….
2) Incredible sunsets with no land in the picture…
3) Meeting another Mac sailor…… who loves to gadget even more than I do….and going out for a great afternoon of sailing while all the girls go play in town. Winds 8-12 pretty steady, sunny weather, barely discernable swell, and no waves to speak of….out in the straights.
4) being able to talk Mac ideas and mods without making the admirals eyes glaze over. Drink Beer with a new mac buddy. Dinner with our new friends ;)
5) Sailing for a while under genny alone…on the way back….with the flood current…. 15 degrees heel, 11.5 mph ground speed for over an hour and ½. Getting the hull speed of 7mph when loaded to gills, with genny and main pulled in tight. (with the rigging just starting that hum I like to hear.
6) Marine wildlife.
7) Being able to recover from a plugged water pump by simply connecting the pressurized water system to the Nissan discharge pee tube. (damn that alarm is irritating.)
8) safely navigating out of the Victoria gorge all the way from Tillicum street on a minus tide……. (I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS) That is one shallow…… tub of water….No other boat was operating other than kayaks Even the water taxi waited till the level rose a bit.. And they were having trouble….lol…. ( one of those bridge passages is only 16 ft wide…….and 3 kts of current….. you do the math….
9) the only damage to the boat was pulling out some of the cushion snaps out of the fiberglass seats (well, occasionally we had to heel past 25 degrees…as the main was being dumped)…… and a small bend in the prop, earned when I tried to exit the gorge at a minus tide....
10) recovering quickly from plugged fuel lines...... lets see, where does the rust in the gas line come from (I have aluminim tanks) Check your filters often when getting gas in canada.....
11) only a few unplanned gybes….. and a good natured buddy who tolerated my inattention and poor vocabulary. Lets see……. That is VANG……spelled V…..A……N….G….. no matter how many times I call it a Cunningham on my boat……….lol. Thanks John, was definitely a great day on the water. Next time lets get a little more wind.!!!

(like we had on the next day going home...... we shot out of Vic harbor for a 20 mile reach..........the kind of stuff you write home about....)

Incredible 3 days on the water......... and the next 2 were just as good.

Next.....

Glad to hear you had a great time. I'm sorry we weren't able to connect with you and John (and respective crew). We were accosted (sp?) by our neighbours upon our return home and I knew by Thurs. pm (next free opportunity) everyone would be well into your plans. I hope there is another opportunity to make amends sometime.

Regards,
Shane

I'll get brave enough to cross the staits but probably not this year. Victoria is a great destination because its a great tourist trap. Lots of food, street activities, great water front, museums and things to see, no need for cars to get around. Just a great place to boat.

I'll drive over to the PT Wooden Boat Show. A couple of the ships used in the filming of Pirates where anchored in our harbor last week. The wife and kids went down and went aboard but I was stuck at work. :-( I think it was the "Interceptor" from the movie. I just saw it from the road.
