The difference between jib and genoa cars?
Hi, all
I'm buying a 150 Genoa. Is it necessary to buy new cars for it? Do the jib cars not work for Genoa?
Thanks,
Srdjan

I do not believe Roger sells the jib cars anymore. He just ships the Genny cars, whether you have a jib or a genny.
As for the EZ cleats.... DO NOT USE THEM!!!
I don't care who sells them....
They will bend, snap right off, the bolts will pull right out of their sockets, you name it, it will happen. As it has to me. Always use the winches.
I use mine now, just to raise and lower my bumpers..... for that.... they are great.

Yes, I heard the same thing from the dealer, glad I got a set of each, but I started out with a jib and got the genny later. Perhaps it because headsails are now an option and most elect for a genoa on a furler. If Roger no longer sells them I'd get them elsewhere but I'd get them.beene wrote:I do not believe Roger sells the jib cars anymore. He just ships the Genny cars, whether you have a jib or a genny.

My EZ's were fine.... until I started sailing in winds over 25kts.
That is when they stared showing their...... shall we say... limitations.
As far as hiking out, if I didn't do that, she'd be rounding up all the time in those high winds.
But the good news is, which I am sure you will like, I finally got one of those fancy inflatable life vests. So I will be actually wearing a life jacket while hiking out/single handing/etc this summer.

Also, how long a tether
Will you be dragged along behind the boat, or, dangling like a piece of meat, arms flailing
I seem to be in a noir mood

My ez cleats didn't fail, probably because I didn't use them long enough for that to happen. There is no way to trim a sheet w/o the winch unless you're in really light winds. I don't like the idea of luffing up to trim the headsail... just aint right. Anyone want a pair of ez cleats real cheap
As for the genny cars, KH can sell you a pair. I'm sure BWY would too.
On edit: I don't think genny cars are the best thing if flying a jib. I'm sure they'll work, but the sheeting angle may be compromised due to the cars swiveling vs. the jib car which will only pivot on its axis but won't twist out to leeward. Should keep the clew at a better angle and provide a more direct feed of the sheet to the winch. Just my humble opinion... I haven't actually tried the genny cars on the jib track since I have a set of each.

I've literally never had to use the advantage of a winch in order to trim my job sheets. I can imagine it might be different with a big genoa, but with my working job I can muscle it no problem. I just got some EZ cleats from Bill last December and hope to be able to use them sometime this year, if I don't sell my boat first. Anyone know anyone interested in a 1983 Mac 25... with unused EZ cleats?
