Everybody Drives Mid Point Sail

Post by ROAD Soldier »

After driving up to Rock Hall for Saturday's events at Mock About Sail with out my :macx: :( there was talk about having an event before Pirate Sail somewhere between the two major camps of Macgregor's; that being Maryland and North Carolina. How about Old Fort Monroe Marina which in no civilian owned and run to Cape Charles sometime in August :?: It is $2 a foot at Fort Monroe unless you are US Boat Member then it is $1.50 a foot.

That looks like a mid point to me.

When?

Looks halfway to me, at least as the crow flies.
Set the date so we can have another excuse to go sailing.

All right I just put in to have the 15-16th of August off which Thursday and Friday. Plans so far is:
1.Thursday a and Friday at Fort Monroe.
2.Cross the 20NM wide Southern Chesapeake Bay to Cape Charles on Saturday.
3. Return to the 24hour Boat Ramp at Fort Monroe on Sunday.

We will be at two Marinas so there are no campfires there maybe some charcoal grills I don't remember all the details from when I stayed there in 2008 if they had some or not. I need to research this more this weekend. Also don't know yet if the civilians that took over Fort Monroe opened up its awesome beach to the public yet.

For things to do:
1. We could run water taxi service to Hampton historic district for shopping and dinning.
2. Families can tour Fort Monroe Museum and grounds.
3. There is a black gun powder event scheduled on Saturday from 1000-1600 so if families are interested in that we can take off later in the day for Cape Charles.
4. For history buffs you will be completely surrounded by it at nearly all times.
5. For those that like to fish both Fort Monroe area and Cape Charles are great fishing areas.
6. Cape Charles is like Rock Hall MD except not as modernized or visited and downtown in well within walking distance from the Marina.

Ron,

Unfortunately we will not be able to make the trip this time. Our kids are headed back to school during that time and need help with various problems.

I am in. Am I still allowed if I don't have to drive to get there? 8) My boat is just down the bay a few miles at lynnhaven inlet.

We do the eastern shore/cape charles pretty often, last weekend we went over and the bluefish were hitting the whole way there and back.

Fort Monroe beaches/grounds are free and open to the public now.

Cape charles put in new docks in 2011, they are nice. We generally stop in there when passing by, you can stay all day for free if you show a receipt from town.

Other side trips...South of cape charles is Kiptopeake state park, neat to sail by there on the way and see the sunken concrete ships. We often spend the night there as long as the winds are not out of the southwest, nice beach, fishing pier, campground and park. Also around the southern tip you can sail over to Smith Island. Its a large uninhabited Atlantic barrier Island (similiar to cape lookout in NC) that almost no one ever ventures out to. The shells there are awesome if you like collecting.

About a mile or two north of cape charles is Cherrystone creek and cherrystone camping resort. Nice protected anchorage. The campground has multiple swimming pools and live music on weekends if you happen to be a camper...or arrive from the water via dinghy or kayak....So I hear...

If you have an extra day First landing state park is south of fort monroe about 8 miles. They have 20+ miles of hiking trails, camping and beaches on both the bay and river. There are no waves on the inland river side so its perfect for beaching the boat and spending the night That is where my avatar picture is from.

If the weather is too rough on the bay you can always sail down the river from fort monroe to waterside marina in norfolk, or the free landings in portsmouth.

If you follow this order to the lettter I might let you go to Pirate Sail as a reward :P .

Sorry about that Ron. We'll make it up to you :(

Long story here. In addition to the kids school move, we ended up no notice buying (Grizzly 10% off sale) a garage full of equipment (lathe, milling machine with CNC conversion, etc.) for the ongoing project, round xx. Massive clean up project to make room, from the bonus room on down.

Figures :P

I had not cleared your permission yet, so will have to stay a lowly outsider. The weather was perfect so on a whim friday afternoon tried a dry run over to the eastern shore. We spent the night at smith island then Saturday sailed up to cape charles and back down to VB, about 40 miles under sail yesterday with only 15 minutes of motoring :)

Guess I will have to run it again by the original plan to earn scallywag worthiness.... :P Sailboats are for sailing point to point and not drying out on a trailer going down the highway though, so not sure I will make a pirate sail.
