Friend at my club did the ICW and stored her boat in Florida when she came back to Canada.

Her "Paprika" did just fine but the boat next to hers fell on top of it and fubar'd her mast. (Paprika is the one with the black tarp) :(

Still no power or communication at the yard, so no one can do any assessments and she has no idea whether it's a repair or a write-off.

"Paprika" looks to be doing the best in that bunch. I'm always astonished at how those jack stands can support a sailboat with any amount of wind blowing.

That photo reminds me of my dad's boat after Hurricane Sandy. Pile of boats. :( The yard sorted them out and then punched a hole in the bottom of his boat with a misplaced jack stand.

Boats fit into the "stuff" category. Ian took many lives and many homes. So much devastation.

Ouch!

For me it would mean converting to motor only, as it would cost as much as shipping a whole yacht, but I have heard of people re-masting their Macs in America, so it's possible

She got word. It's a write off. Among other things, the shrouds seem to have ripped the chain plate - and the bulkhead it was attached to - right out of the hull :(

House insurance and boat insurance is going way up in Florida. My house insurance last year was $2,690 on a 2,500 square foot block home. Our policy with a change to no wind damage coverage is $702. Also before the storm 6 more insurance companies pulled out of Florida. They will be rebuilding for the next 5 to ten years. There are still hundreds of homes flooded in central Florida. It hurts to know what those folks are going through.

I was traveling by RV in the SW (as in AZ & NM) headed back home to Florida when Ian hit. I am home now. Home and boat did well during the hurricane, but the flooding post hurricane brought the St. Johns River and associated lakes to higher flood levels than I have seen in the past 20+ years. My Mac 26X was well moored in the Downtown Sanford Marina. Boat came through hurricane very well, even dry inside my brother reported. But as the flooding of Lake Monroe has occurred, sections of the "E" dock to which my boat is moored have started to sink, and it is reported that the ramp to the "previously floating" dock has also given up the ghost and sunk. The whole marina isle is without power, and the marina office is still flooded. The marina staff assure me by email that my boat is fine, but they are moving all boats on "E" dock to other docks. Last year they built an assisted living facility on the "isle," and they had to evacuate the residents when the water levels got so high. We are asked by marina staff not to try to get to our boats on "E" dock, so I have not laid eyes on "American Spirit" since I returned home. We'll see...film at 11, as they used to say! :|

Finally got up to my boat today. St. Johns River and associated Lake Monroe have been at the highest flood stage we have seen in recent decades. Levels are starting to recede slightly, but my admiral and I Had to be taken to my slip on "E" dock by water taxi from the marina fuel dock because the first section of the floating dock had sunk and the ramp to that section hangs down into the water.
Image
During the water taxi trip, you could see seawalls just at the surface that normally stand several feet above water level.
Image
The marina isle was just barely above water levels, and the marina manager related that the dry storage building had had a foot of water at the peak.
Image
The outer half or "E" dock was totally missing.
Image
The adjacent finger pier and previous neighboring pontoon boat were nowhere to be seen.
Image
All the damage I had on American Spirit was a slightly torn engine cover and a ragged edge to my jib leech Sunbrella border/cover. The large orange twist ties help keep the jib furled.
Image

Image
All in all, I was profoundly thankful that there was no damage of any substance. Kudos to my friend, Lamar, and his two kids, Cooper and Carlee, who prepped the boat for Ian in my absence while I was away on an RV trip to California. Bravo Zulu, guys.
Image
My chief complaint at this point is having a bat or two that homesteaded in my covered mainsail. Small worries considering.

Wow, your marina looks like a mess. You have good friends who look after your boat. Glad to see the damage was minimal. Especially after seeing all hose boats piled up on the West coast of FL.

Yes, the marina staff say it is the worst they have ever seen. The marina is owned by the city of Sanford, so repairs will proceed at the "speed of government". OBTW, our "E" dock has
an "M" docked there, but I do not know if the owner is a member/poster on this forum or not.

I think that's the worst I've ever seen there. Glad your boat made it through safely.

This little fellow started sleeping in my main after I chased him out of the engine cover a couple of times.

Yeah, that is good news!

You must have been dreading it as you got closer to your boat?

Heck, the little fella probably managed to keep your hatches battened and sails furled during the worst of the storm with her mate!

Who knows how they heroically managed to tighten the dock lines while the winds blew and the waves surged by themselves!

😉😉

I was mostly worried about accidentally hurting him if I did not get him out of the engine or sail. Other than making an occasional mess, they are more useful controlling insects than any problems they cause.
